Grant against Confederate forces and lost most of its residents to fighting; only 178 people remained by 1865 when Union troops burned down all but one building in the town center. After the war, many civilians returned to Shiloh and it grew slowly again until it reached its current size of 2,898 persons as of the 2000 census enumeration

The name is derived from the Shawnee word "shilo" meaning "to cleanse," and "hollow" because of the lack of trees in the area. By 1840, only 3 people lived there and by 1845, there were none left. In 1850-1851, Shiloh had just 2 residents and by 1860-1861 only 5 remained. It wasn't until 1862 that any new arrivals came to Shiloh and until then it mostly served as an agricultural community with land around the river being used for farming and hunting opportunities. In 1870-71, when European settlers began arriving to Illinois they started arriving to what is now Shilohl Valley which included what is now Shilohl Township. At this time many settlers decided to move away from Missouri due to political unrest that was taking place at that time as well as harsh winters here in Illinois which made travel difficult or impossible much like it does today given snowplows/drivers etc.? Many early settlers form what is now rural Cook County including some from western Willamette Valley also moved into these areas looking for greener pastures? Eventually more than 1,000 families settled within what are today's boundaries of Shiloh Township after moving westward during the 1830s specifically looking for land available south of Interstate 90? In 1874-75 when Jno Sibley first arrived he found some abandoned buildings near where his farm would eventually be located along with other resources such as water rights that would come into play later on while doing business with local landowners? This led him start investing money into developing this area becoming one ofShilohl's earliest commercial investors? Today many descendants still live within those original boundaries making it an interesting place to live if you're interested in tracing your family tree!
