Shiloh was founded in 1837 as a small town in the far northcentralwest corner of Illinois. At that time, there were only a few scattered homesteads and settlements in what is now Shiloh County. The area around present-day Shiloh was all forest land, with plenty of game to hunt. The first settler in what is now Shiloh County, John Newton, built his cabin on the banks of the Whitewater River in 1837. The town's namesake, Captain John Newton (1792-1867), served as a captain in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and also fought against Native Americans at Battle of Buena Vista Creek. In 1839, Captain Newton donated 1 acre (0.40 km2) of land to be used for a courthouse and village square. The town motto was "Erected by Our Captains" until it was changed to "In Memory of Our Fallen Heroes" in 1862 due to Confederate activity within the communitychoes back more than 100 yearsof American military history from local farmersand men who volunteered their services during both world wars

Shiloh, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 80,673 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Chicago after Chicago Heights. Shiloh is the county seat of Cook County. Shiloh was founded by Methodist missionaries on December 6, 1824 as a military post to support their efforts to convert the Kickapoo Indians living near Chicago into Christianity. The post became a town on May 1, 1830 when it was annexed by Chicago. On November 3, 1872 Shiloh incorporated as a city and became one of the five cities in Cook County that were chartered with charter status from the State of Illinois on January 5, 1893. On October 15, 1907 it merged with its neighbor Des Plaines to form an even more populous and diverse city than before with over 100 housing options for citizens including parks and open spaces for public use like present-day Midtown Park and South Shore Drive east of Michigan Avenue just north of Lake Michigan. The first mayor of Shiloh was Wm Daugherty who served from 1909 until his death in 1915 and then John Phelan who served for two terms from 1915 until his death in 1922. In 1959 Mayor Richard Jaffe appointed Edward Ruhl as City Administrator which created many new opportunities for civic engagement including arts programs such as Fundraiser's Highway Gallery; beautification projects such as installation of paving around Rivers Bend neighborhoods between 95th Street and 99th Street Streets; development/acquisition of land adjacent to Douglas Park off Foster Road; community organization services such as Neighborhood Watch; voter registration drives; gateway projects like completion of Eisenhower Expressway (now I-290) connecting downtown to Halsted Junction Boulevard; addition/ renovation/upgrading/replacement of historic buildings within municipal boundaries including Holy Cross Catholic Church (founded 1865), Masonic Hall (established 1847), First Presbyterian Church (established 1800), Schuller Brewery Building (1861).
