Shiloh, Illinois is a small town in theeast central United States. It was founded in 1837 by Methodist missionaries. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Biddle. The town grew rapidly and by 1851 it had a population of 5,000. In the early years of the 21st century, Shiloh was one of Illinois' fastest-growing cities with an estimated population of over 100,000 people. In 1911, Shiloh became the site of the first rifle match held in America. Perry Exley won the match with a .30 caliber rifle from Adirondack hunting lodge in Canada. Rifle matches were popularized in America during this time and continue to be played to this day at various venues across the country. In 1934, during World War II, Shiloh served as a training ground for American military personnel stationed in Europe. Today Shiloh is known for its annual Cowboy shooting tournament which attracts thousands of visitors each year. The event features hundreds of different firearms including rifles and shotguns from around the world.

The town was founded in 1837 and named for General David Shiloh, who fought in the Mexican–American War. It is located on the banks of the stream that bears its name. Shiloh is one of several towns located along the Great Miami River in Kane County. The other communities include Arlington Heights and grove City. They are all part of Chicago's South Side metropolitan area. The settlement around Shiloh started out as a farming community with a few hundred people living there by 1837. In 1840, a post office was established in Shiloh and it remained an active postal service until 1953. The first school was built in 1841 and classes were taught by volunteers from nearby Arlington Heights and grove City Schools until 1893 when Shilohlite School became operational under charter from Rev Aaron Drysdale. Shilohlite School closed in 1951 due to budget deficits but it reopened under new management two years later as Northwest High School which remains open to this day as one of Chicago's oldest public high schools In 1965, Northwestern High School merged with Parkland High School to form Parkland-Northwestern High School which continues to operate today . In 1969, Northwestern-Parkland merged again with Joliet East Catholic HS (now Joliet West HS) to form Joliet North HS which still operates today . Finally, in 2003 Northern Illinois University (NIU) opened its doors within the boundaries of Shilohlite Township and thus reincorporated into the town proper; however NIU retains its campus within Parkland Township
