After years of debate among residents over whether or not to annex Carbondale - which would have made it an even larger city - voters finally agreed to do so on Valentine's Day 1916 due to concerns about how residentially cohesive both villages could be under one roof. The annexation created what is now known as Carbondale Township within Shiloha's boundaries
