When the Union Army moved from Kentucky to Shiloh, Illinois in April 1861, they had no choice but to bring their rifles with them. The Springfield Armory had already rebuilt and was now productioning new rifles for the military. The only rifle scopes available at this time were those made by Jesse Applegate and Company. The Union army arrived at Shiloh on April 6th and quickly realized that there was much more of the Confederate States of America present than they had anticipated. They were also greatly outnumbered and outgunned. As a result, many soldiers decided not to fight and instead retreated back into town. One of the main tasks of General Ulysses S. Grant’s forces during this time was to clear out all of Shiloh and its surrounding areas so that no supplies or troops could be brought into the city without being captured or killed by Confederate forces. This task took up a significant portion of his day and night as he fought his way through Confederate lines looking for any sign of resistance. On April 11th, General Grant finally reached within range of Confederate positions around town after dayslong fighting. He ordered his artillery to bombard the buildings in order to force surrender from the defenders. Unfortunately, due to Confederate snipers positioning themselves atop several high buildings in town, most casualties occurred when rounds smashed through windows rather than detonating inside provide cover from enemy fire; thereby leaving civilians unwary victims in addition to soldiery under fire.. As a result, South Carolina’s Governor Isaac Pemberton called off hostilities on April 12th which ended what is generally considered as one of the bloodiest battles in American history with over 25 thousand US casualties including 5 officers (including Ulysses S Grant) who died during battle (as well as an unknown number dead among Confederates). In total, almost 400 Americans were killed while hundreds more were wounded or captured..

The first settler in what would become Shiloh was John Purdy who arrived around 1827 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. He named his cabin "Purdy's Grove." A post office called Pleasant Prairie was established in 1839 by John Purdy and his wife Rebecca with the name shortened to Pleasant Prairie because they were not wanted by other settlers nearby who thought they were moving away from their homes to take up land grants from the government. A store opened in 1840 under storekeeper Elijah Sibley which became known as "Sibley's Store" until 1862 when it closed due to financial problems caused by American Civil War involvement and reconstruction efforts In 1853 Isaac Ladd moved from Tiffin, Ohio to start a farm east of where Pleasant Prairie now stands and named it after himself - Ladds Grove Ladds Grove continued growing through many years as more families started arriving until 1920 when only 12 households remained after township officials merged with neighbouring townships In 1937 an addition called "Cottonwood" was added which became home to another grocery store before closing down in 1984 In 1943 an addition called "Allendale" was added which housed two stores before becoming home to yet another grocery store before closing down again in 1988 (At this point there were only four active businesses left) In 2000-2001 during development efforts for new shopping centres planned for Springfield Township these buildings were razed along with much of downtown Shiloh including its pre-Civil War architecture
