Shiloh is a town in Shiloh Township, Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in the area was Elijah Boone in 1820. He built a cabin on a hill east of what is now the village of Holcomb and named it "Boone's Hill". A post office called Booneville was established in 1827, but no one moved to it because there was no phone service in that part of Illinois at that time. In 1828 Daniel Boone passed through Shiloh on his way from Mount Vernon to Springfield. He stopping at the cabin of James Caldwell and told him he would be coming through soon and if Caldwell owned land near by he should send for him to come and look for it. This made an impression on many residents because they had never seen or heard of anyone from Virginia before. In 1830 Zebulon Pike passed through Shiloh and stopped at the home of John Denton to buy some horses for his journey into Indiana. When he got back up north he sold all his horses including Denton's horse which now stands on First National Bank property across from Union Station in downtown Knoxville! Later that year David Whitfield founded what is now Whitfield Farms west of town (now within Polk Township). It is said that when Whitfield started farming he took all the adventitious plants collected during the War of 1812-14 such as cinquefoil flowers and other rare items brought over by American forces as booty - this helped make Whitfield Farms one of only a few areas in central Illinois where wildflowers are still grown today! In 1835 Isaac McCoy settled near present day White Settlement (southwest corner current building lot) after fleeing Kentucky during Indian Wars withoes seeking refuge from dueling Shawnee warriors impeding trade with Missourians east of Fort Dearborn! What today is known as the Historic District of Shiloh was designated as such by the city of Decatur on December 17, 1978. This area included most of present day Shiloh, along with portions of old Decatur and Union Counties to the east and west, respectively. Shiloh has experienced many changes throughout its history; some good while others have been less fortunate. In 1831, when Illinois became a state, one half of what now makes up Cook County - which includes Springfield - became part of University Park (now Evanston). Almost immediately thereafter, an agreement was made between two northern Indiana men - James Hickey and George Stephenson - to purchase 2/3 mile (1 km) of land extending frompresent-day Northwestern Drive south to State Road 6 near White Sands Lake on Antelope Creek. The men named their new township after General John Brown's army that had fought against American forces at Harpers Ferry during the War for Independence (1775-1777).
