Shiloh is located in the far northwest corner of Illinois, and it has been a center for cotton production from the early 1800s. The town was founded in 1811 as a part of what would eventually become Shiloh County. It became an important cotton plantation town during the Civil War because of its location and its access to transportation. The Battle of Shiloh took place on July 6, 1862, and it resulted in the death of more than 1,500 Confederate soldiers. After the war, Shiloh experienced a period of growth and development. In 1901, it became the county seat for Cook County. In 1928, it became an incorporated city.
