In 1864, the Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee attacked Union forces at Shiloh, Tennessee. The Union army was outnumbered and outgunned, and their commander in chief, Ulysses S. Grant, decided to withdraw. However, before he could leave, Confederate cavalryman riding ahead of the main body galloped into town and massacre innocent civilians. This event is known as the Battle of Shiloh. In 1865, General Grant withdrew his army to Cairo Junction in Missouri after reaching a deal with Confederate President Abraham Lincoln that allowed slavery to continue in the Southern United States without being abolished.

On December 4th 1861 Shilochia residents voted to annex their neighbor to the west as part of a plan to create a more populous area within the newly formed city limits (the annexation would later be rejected). By 1870 Shilohlians had grown tired of living near each other and petitioned for their own incorporation into one larger community; this request was granted on April 9th 1870. The original downtown business district around Superior Avenue & Michigan Avenue survive today and are home to several restaurants including Pizzeria Bianco which has been open since 1907. In addition there are several large department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Co., Macy's Incorporated dating back to 1892 when it moved its operations out of New York City after purchasing lots adjacent to what is now First National Bank Building on State Street (now First Midwest Bank building) across from Northwestern University’s McCormick Place campus where they operated for over 100 years before moving out again in 2007 along with most other big box retailers (). Some smaller businesses have also survived or relocated inside these buildings like Pod Systems Engineering headquartered off State Street between Macy's and JCPenney - started out as Radio Shack - which continues operation today even though all devices required an RFID tag nowadays
