It became a center for slave trade and cotton plantations. As the number of slaves increased, Shiloh came to be known as the " Slave Capital of America." In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he ordered all Union troops out of Missouri and into Illinois. This caused much excitement in Shiloh, which culminated with a special session of the state legislature to consider secession from the United States. However, few people wanted to leave their homes and businesses behind and secede from what they saw as an oppressive government. Ultimately, Shiloh chose not to secede and remain within the United States.
