Shiloh is an old post town in Shiloh County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the banks of the Missouri River. The town was founded by General David Dixon in 1811 as a trading post and became an important military center during the War of 1812. In 1839, Shiloh was acquired by the Union Army as part of a land deal made with Mexico. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded most of its Texas territory to the United States. At that time, Shiloh lay within Mexican territory and all but 2 miles (3 km) of its bank remained under American control. In 1862, Union General Ulysses S. Grant proposed moving the seat of government from Springfield to Shiloh so that it would be closer to his army's theater of operations in Tennessee. The proposal met opposition from local residents who argued that their town should remain one within their own county. Ultimately, Grant accepted using nearby Mount Lebanon as his new capital and moved governmental services from Springfield to Shilol

In 1916, the United States War Department approved plans for what would become the new Army Ammunition Plant at Shiloh. The plant would produce munitions for World War I and II. After World War II, the Army left Shilopoihiuh only to come back in 1959 with an even larger plant that employs over 2,000 people today! Today, Shiloh is known as an important center for education with more than 20 schools and colleges located within its boundaries; including Northwestern Illinois University-LaGrange (in La Grange), Hancock Community College (in Hancock), Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), and Technical College ofIllinois-Carbondale (TCIC).
