It is the county seat of Shiloh County and part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the north side of the Hannibal River. The first firearm in Shiloh was an old musket that was used by its citizens to shoot pigeons. The first pistols were made from solid oak and were used for personal protection only. Rifle ammunition was not available until 1853 when it was imported from England. Shiloh is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville– Joliet Metropolitan Area and is included in the Chicago-Naperville-Kankakee Combined Statistical Area. The village of Shiloh was incorporated in 1857 and was merged into Shiloh on December 1, 1955. The first settler in what would become Shiloh were two white men who traveled from Kentucky to survey the area for a new home in 1827. One of these men, James Hancey, erected a cabin on what is now Main Street. A second group of settlers arrived from Kentucky around 1830 and named their town after General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law Colonel John Quincy Adams (1763–1837). They located their community on the east bank of the Illinois River just below where present day US Highway 66 crosses it. In 1856, Joshua Tilton organized a group to purchase 640 acres (258 ha) along the west bank of the river from Captain John Stephenson for $10 per acre ($2 per sq m). This land became known as "Tilton Prairie" because it had been purchased by Major David Tiffen during his expedition against Tecumseh's band led by Tecumseh himself back in 1792. In 1862 Wm Fenton bought 602 acres (248 ha) adjacent to Tilton Prairie from Captain John Stephenson for $15 per acre ($3 per sq m). This land became known as "Fenton Prairie". It wasn't until 1871 when Reverend Moses Weiser established an Agricultural Society near where Heineman Road meets State Route 53 that agriculture began to take hold hereabouts. By 1865 agricultural production had reached 100 bushels/acre (3 metric tons/ha), making this region one of early America’s leading grainproducing areas—more so than any other location east of Missouri Valley except for those along Ohio’s Cuyahoga River watershed (). In 1870 Isaac Nottage arrived with his family settling on 120 acres (45 ha) northeast of present day Main Street which he called “Nottage Manor” due to its position being advantageous towards both waterfowl hunting and access to Indian cornfields (). Nottage built a small log cabin thereon before selling it two years later to Gideon Wellessey who renamed it “Wellesley Hall” upon becoming acquainted with Reverend Moses Weiser through mutual acquaintances . By 1880 nearly all residents living within 2 miles (3 km) or less east or west OF US HWY 66 were farmers (), although some rural households continued raising livestock () until after World War II . Accordingly most people associated with Shiloh throughout its history have been involved directly or indirectly in agriculture—-a fact not lost on many recent settlers who continue various farmstead operations today .

Shiloh was a black community in Illinois. It was located on the right bank of the Mississippi River, about 25 miles south of Chicago. The community was founded in 1837 by African Americans who had recently escaped slavery. Shiloh grew rapidly and soon became an important agricultural center. In 1865, it became the site of a battle between Union troops and Confederate forces. Shiloh fell to Union forces, but the town continued to grow and prosper until its destruction in 1921 by a fire.

In 1847, Shiloh became a township under the jurisdiction of La Salle County. In 1861, it became a Village when it annexed portions of neighboring townships. In 1932, it merged with neighboring town of Jacksonville to form what is now known as Shiloh Township. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer arrived at Fort Harrison and camped near present-day Shiloh for three months before he departed for battle against Indian forces near Chicago. During that time, many people who lived adjacent to Fort Harrison came over and saw General Custer's encampment and decided to move into what is now known as Shiloha Township which had been donated by John Atherton Postell. There were also some buildings on this site that are still standing today including a Masonic Lodge built in 1876 which has been preserved as part of the fort's museum complex since its creation.
