Shiloh, Illinois is a small town in the southern part of the United States. It was founded in 1836 by John Brown and others who were seeking to create a new home for themselves following the American Civil War. The town prospered during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location near Wabash River, timber resources, and agricultural production. However, World War I caused a decline in economic activity and population growth; Shiloh only reached a peak population of around 1,600 in 1920. Shiloh, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shiloh is also home to Mount Carmel Baptist Church and Stinson Elementary School. The first settlers in what is now Shiloh were Methodist ministers from Tennessee who came overland in wagons to find land for their new congregation on the banks of the Sangamon River in 1811. On July 16, 1831, a group of men led by Ebenezer Emmons platted what became Shiloh on a tract of land they had acquired from Alexander Boone. The village was named after General James Armistead Shilohl who fought at Fallen Timbers during the War of 1812. Shiloh's growth began with its location as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and easy access to water resources. In addition, it became known for its leather tanning industry which helped keep the town prosperous until about 1910 when it switched to manufacturing items such as radios and televisions. From 1960-1990 Shiloha produced more than half of all domestic plastic products made in Illinois In recent years there has been much investment brought in by local businesses and developers into revitalizing downtown areas including remodeling old storefronts into mixed-use buildings and creating new retail spaces inside or outside of existing buildings As one of only three towns remaining within McLean County without a high school (the others beingSpringfield and Danville), students attend either Mt Carmel High School or Stinson Elementary School which are located just east of downtown on Ulysses Street between State streets and Pryor Avenue
