In 1840, Methodist missionaries John Meeks and Gershom Ladd opened a school at Shiloh under the leadership of Rev. Jepson Wiley. By 1846, there were five schools operating in the town: Wiley's School & Bible House; Presbyterian Minister's Sunday School; Methodist Episcopal Church—St Andrews'; and African AmericanMethodist Church—Shilothaites'. In 1865, when Shilohan City annexed neighboring Danville Township to become its own municipality, it maintained its separate school system with Drury Academy as its primary provider of education for white students only until 1915 when all elementary schools merged into one edifice called "Cook County High School" which still stands today as one of Chicago's leading high schools for boys and girls ages 9-12 In recent years there has been talk of building a new high school downtown that would serve both white and minority students but no action has taken place . The old Cook County High School building on State Street across from Northwestern University remains vacant to this day . There are plans to raze the old courthouse which sat on Old Main Street across from Cook County High School which would make way for a new downtown hotel/residential complex but no progress has been made since then either ....
