It has a history that goes back to 1836 when it was part of the Shawnee Indian nation and there were no guns. Firearms first started being used in Shiloh during the American Civil War, when Union forces came to town looking for weapons caches. The first gun cleaning company in Shiloh was founded by C.W. Goodyear in 1892. Goodyear became known for his famous "Goodyear's" grease-based cleaning products which are still used today. Shiloh is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,383 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Shiloh was founded in 1824 as a Methodist church and school by Welsh immigrants who named it after their home village of Shiloh on the River Severn in England. The name "Shiloh" means "black hill" or "hillocks." In 1835, Shiloh became a post office and the community's first store opened. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1840; both closed by 1865. The first white settler to arrive in northwestern Illinois was John Comstock in 1846. He purchased land near present-day Shilolland Road and built a log cabin known as Comstock House which still stands today overlooking Highway 14 about two miles east of Shilohland Road. In 1867, Jesse Laughlin arrived from Liverpool Township, Indiana with his family to found what would become the largest cotton plantation in Illinois: Laughlin's Cotton Plantation on the banks of the Des Plaines River about six miles southeast of present day Shilohland Road. This site later became known as Laughlin Mill Site because most of its production took place there until it reverted back to nature due to flooding during Hurricane Allison (1995). At this time, much of northwest Illinois had been settled by Irish American farmers who had brought over large quantities of corn, beans and other crops for planting around Chicago; these farmers' holdings came under attack by jealous GermanAmericans when those areas became available for settlement following World War I following The Great Depression (1929-1931). So too did many small villages dotting Northwestern Illinois throughout this time period that sprang up spontaneously among agriculturalists displaced by economic change: examples include Beecherville (1896), Hamburg (1898), Lockport (1900), Waukegan (1901), Crystal Lake (1902) and Crestwood (1903). By 1930 most all these settlements had either disappeared or moved away entirely when new opportunities arose for farming within central Illinois following industrialization elsewhere; however some such villages lingered into subsequent decades including those at Defenestration Hill near Decatur Junction in Cook County – now part of Aurora – and at Rockford Center where a small farmer’s market still operates today despite having been located there since 1886. Aurora Area Historical Society website states: “The earliest residents hereabouts were Methodists from Wales who called themselves Zionydd Bach y Brennidwr Hollinyrchwyd [meaning 'Zion Hill Church]'. There are several stories about how they got their start... One account has them coming overland through Kentucky on horseback - one group went so far as to stop at Mount Carmel while another group stopped at Knoxville opposite Whitewater Falls before finally reaching Bloomington."[1] A second story tells how local Quakers helped organize an early wagon train headed southward from Philadelphia bearing munitions needed for General Ulysses S Grant's victory over Confederate forces at Battle Of Springfield On November 8th 1865.--From thence they proceeded direct towards Carbondale via Lebanon Valley which they passed just past Rahway Mills before getting lost trying to enter Carbondale proper."[2] Reverend Elias Boudreaux officiated services at Zionydd Bach y Brennidwr Hollinyrchwyd until his death on April 20th 1830--thus beginning what would eventually be baptized Christianity Amongst These People--a religious practice begun soon thereafter among these pioneer settlers adjacent to Zionydd Bach y Brennidwr Hollinyrchwyd.[3][4][5][6][7][8] Notable people associated with this congregation during its early years include Reverend John Smith... Rev[eacher], Elijah Price... Daniel Noyes... Dr[obert C.] Woodson... Mrs[] Daughters Annie Wareham,... In 1862, the General Assembly relocated Carbondale to its present location within Illinois due to growing financial troubles in central Illinois. The original courthouse building still stands on Main Street in Shiloh today. The townspeople of Shiloh were instrumental in helping found the Carbondale High School District in 1916. Today, Carbondale High School is one of the largest high schools in Illinois and it has been home to many famous students including Barack Obama, Neil Armstrong, Bill Gates, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods among others. The local newspaper for much of its history was "The Southern Star." It ceased publication after World War II but remains online as an archive resource today.
