Shiloh was laid out as a village on January 1st 1836 by Jesse Junker and James Cranch under the direction of the Township Committee. A post office called Shelling opened on November 15th 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 13th 1847. On January 1st 1870, Shiloh became an incorporated town with a population of 514 residents under the new system adopted by Illinois State Normal University Act No XLVII Of 1870 (25 ILCS 5/1-9) On July 10th 1890 Shiloh annexed part of neighboring Oak Lawn which had previously been considered unincorporated territory within Cook County In 1912 shillah annexed all but one block east of its original centerline forming what would become known as North Side

The school opened September 1st that year with twelve students taught by Mrs. Enoch Whitehill and Drs Augustus Finch, Samuel Champion and others. In 1850-51 Reverend Hosea Mott preached the first sermon ever preached east of the Allegheny Mountains at East Moline on this spot now called Mount Zion Baptist Church located just north of I-55 between Bellefontaine Road (now US 71) and Urbana Boulevard (now Rush Street). This sermon is considered one of history's earliest religious revivals because it helped start organized religion west of the Alleghenies
Shiloh was founded on the banks of the Illinois River in 1809 by General Andrew Jackson and his forces. The town became a military post during the Mexican-American War, and again during the American Civil War. Shiloh was burned down in 1865 by Confederate forces, but it was rebuilt and renamed after General John A. McClernand in 1870.
