Shiloh is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. The village of Shiloh and the incorporated town of Shiloh Heights are also located in Kane County. The first permanent settler in what would become Kane County was James Hanks, who founded a log cabin on the now-defunct Pella Road in 1837. He named his cabin "Shiloh," after his family's home near Palestine Hill, Virginia. In 1839, John Stephenson built a sawmill and gristmill on the site of Shilohl's current business district. The area became known as Stephensonville because so many early settlers were from that vicinity. Shiloh post office was established in 1840, and remained open until it closed effective July 1, 1966. In 1848–49 local farmers formed the first Masonic Lodge at present-day Shilohl High School; their first meeting took place on February 11th of that year under the name "Masonic Association." For many years Masons served primarily as support staff for religious services at various churches throughout Kane County while they awaited construction of an Masonic Temple to be erected in shabby condition just outside town limits (the temple still stands but is not used). This lodge met informally until it began seeking formal recognition as an organized lodge by holding monthly meetings between 1850 and 1860 when its constitution was written up and adopted with full membership June 7th 1860 by vote of all members present voting unanimity having about two thirds majority required for ratification however only six lodges responded to formation making it operative November 3rd 1860 despite lack of active membership). Thereafter regular meetings were held weekly with one exception during the Civil War which occurred during 1862 when only four brethren attended due to Union occupation of Illinois On October 2nd 1870 Solomon Auld opened a general store at 5 S Main Street which later became known as "Auld's" grocery store which remains operational today since 1985 . After 10 years Auld retired from operation and sold out his interest to Wm Jourdan who operated it until 1951 when it came into ownership by Don Kapp who operates it currently In 1946 Harry Price opened Price's Restaurant next door to Auld's grocery store becoming one of only two restaurants remaining open continuously within central Kane county after more than fifty closures over that period including three fire fatalities inside Price's restaurant A new building was constructed adjacent to Price's restaurant (later known as Shaw’s Bar & Grill) around 1955/56 serving largelyas a nightclub until its closure due to patronage losses in the late 1980s followed by demolition beginning in 1990 CEILING: 410 feet above mean sea level
Shiloh was a small town in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The town was located on the banks of the Missouri River. It was founded in 1812 by Col. John Brown and his men as a place where they could rest and regroup after their previous successful raid on the nearby city of Nauvoo. The town prospered for many years until it was destroyed by a combined British and Indian force in 1815.
