Schiller Park is a community located in the far southwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. It was originally named for Friedrich Wilhelm Schiller, who lived there during the early 19th century. The name has been changed several times since then, most recently to honor Abraham Lincoln. Schiller Park is now a rural community with about 1,000 residents and it is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Schiller Park were farmers from Germany who immigrated to the United States in 1847. They started a farm called “Niederwald” near present-day Cicero Avenue and Pulaski Road. In 1853, they sold their farm and moved to a large tract of land that they had bought in section 11 of Cook County. The new owners were Drs. Johann Martin Sauer and John Fisk Kinzie. They named their new land “Schiller Park” after Friedrich Wilhelm Schiller, one of the leading German authors at the time. In 1875, local businessmen James Hickey and George Pullen purchased 3 million acres (12 km2) of forested land east of Chicago for $1 per acre ($27 million today). This became known as Forest Preserve No. 2 because it covered much more than just Schiller Park today! The two men donated this land to Illinois government as part of an effort to promote forestry in Illinois. Forest Preserve No. 2 continues to be used for public recreation today! In 1911, Harry Emerson Fiske designed and built what is now known as Fiske Hall on Bogart Drive in Schiller Park – one of only three buildings designed by him while he was working at Wabash College (now Northwestern University). He also designed many other buildings at Wabash College including Regent Gymnasium (now Elmhurst), Nordstrom Library (now Loyola Law School), Hagerman House (now Rockford Community Hospital), and Smithfield Cottage (now Old Main). It should be noted that during his lifetime Harry Emerson Fiske was well-known both within his profession and outside it; he even won an award from President Theodore Roosevelt! In addition to his work at Wabash College, he also served as superintendent of schools for Kane County from 1907-1909 and director of instruction for Cook County from 1915-1917
