Since the early days of firearms, there have been people who have desired to increase the accuracy and stability of their guns. One such person was Johann Gottfried Wilhelm Freiherr von Steuben, who in 1795 designed and built the first successful repeating rifle, the Gewehr der Kaiserlich-Habsburgischen Armee (1812). Swivels were first patented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1813. The purpose of a swivel is to allow the gun barrel to rotate about its vertical axis with greater precision. This allowed for a more stable platform on which to fire projectiles. Swivels continued to be developed until at least 1846. The development of gun sights began soon after they became popularized with rifles in the late 19th century. By 1890, most pistols had sights that could be directed upward or downward so that they would better align with targets located high above the shooter’s head. With advances in technology and manufacturing, however, it became possible for shooters to purchase guns that came equipped with both an elevated sighting system and a swivel mount. Today, many handguns still come stocked with either an elevation or swivel system as standard equipment.

Each company produces unique designs with its own advantages and disadvantages. BCI's gunswivels use quick-release pins instead of screws to attach their barrels to receivers,[8][9] which makes them more difficult to remove than traditional screw-on gunswives.[10][11] CAL's gunswiver uses self-centering turrets that allow users Toaim any angle at which they want their weapon usable [12][13][14]. While both companies provide quality products, BCI's gunswives tend to cost more than CAL's do; this is likely due to the added features offered by their turrets.
