When Schiller Park was first established in 1871, it was a small village located in the now-vanished town of Moline. The village had only a few hundred residents and most of them lived near the creek that ran through the center of town. In order to provide for these small numbers, the Village Council decided to establish a park in the center of town. This new park would be named after Friedrich Wilhelm Schiller, one of Germany's most famous authors and patriots. The first public meeting on this new park occurred on December 5th, 1871. At this meeting, all of the interested parties were given an opportunity to speak about what they wanted from the new park. The main ideas that came out of this meeting were that the park should have a playground, a ball field, and a brewery. After giving this report back to the Village Council, they passed Resolution No. 3 ordering surveyors to begin work on creating this new park! Work on creating this new park started immediately and by early February 1872 everyone who contributed something towards its creation had received their donation packet! The surveyors managed to complete their work within just four weeks which is pretty impressive considering how much effort went into getting it done! Once everything was completed, it looked like this: In addition to its beautiful landscape features (including an excellent ball field), Schiller Park also boasted some amazing amenities for its time such as a brewery and playground! Today these two amenities are still being used today by families living in Schiller Park or nearby suburbs who love spending quality time with their kids! The Schiller Park Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892, making it one of the oldest rifle and pistol clubs in the United States. The club hosted a rifle match on April 14th, 1893, which was won by George Armstrong Custer. In 1896, the club organized its first pistol match. The match was won by John Philip Sousa.
Schiller Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The park is named after Friedrich Schiller, a German philosopher and writer who lived in the town from 1781 to 1802. The first settlers in Schiller Park were Germans who came to the area around 1800. In 1802, Friedrich Schiller arrived in the area and initially settled on a farm near present-day 60th Street and Cicero Avenue. He began writing letters home about his experiences living in the town and developing relationships with local residents. From 1802 to1809, Schiller worked as an editor for a paper called " Deutsche Freie Presse." In 1810, Schiller bought property near 61st Street and Cicero Avenue for $1 million dollars. He built himself a large home there that still stands today. In addition to his home, Schiller also raised horses and dogs and developed what is now known as the "Schiller Park Estate." This estate included land that surrounded the current site of Northwestern University's Evanston campus. After his death in 1832, his estate passed through several hands before it was acquired by John Dvorak in 1865. Dvorak designed many of Northwestern's buildings including Memorial Hall which was dedicated on April 14, 1889 - one year after he died at age 88 years old. In 1936, Driscoll Field opened as one of three parks located within Chicago's city limits (the others being Roosevelt Lake Park (now Englewood) and Wabash Creek). At its inception, Driscoll Field served primarily baseball but over time it became known for its variety of activities - such as tennis courts (1936), playgrounds (1939), skateboarding ramps (1984), sandboxing (1996), dog walking trails (2002), concerts (2005) and more recently water play areas featuring inflatables (& 2006). Today Driscoll Field remains an important recreation center within Chicago while also serving as both a reminder of early 20th century America as well as an opportunity for people of all ages to come together seasonally for fun activities outdoors!
