Schiller Park, Illinois is a small town located in the far northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Illinois. It lies about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Chicago and 5 miles (8 km) south of St. Louis on I-265, which forms its eastern border. As of the 2010 census, Schiller Park had a population of 3,711. The name "Schiller Park" was first given to the town by German immigrants who named it in honor of Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Schiller, a playwright and poet who lived in nearby Molineux before moving to Germany in 1809. The townsite that now makes up part of Schiller Park was settled by Germans in 1814 when they moved from Hamburg, Germany to what is now DeKalb County after being expelled from their homes during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1816, John Sibley donated land for a school and monastery within what is now Schiller Park proper; these were the first public institutions in the town and remain today as part of Chicagos official history curriculum. The village that developed around this school eventually became known as Libertyville after it was sold to Illinoisans by General James Kappes in 1827 following his victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Hill near Stonington, Connecticut; Kappes renamed it after himself following his victory there two years earlier under similar circumstances. In 1850, businessman Abraham Lincoln’s maternal grandfather – Daniel Prentice – purchased 6 farmsteads southeast of Schiller Park from Tobias Doolittle for $4 per acre ($38 per kilometer). This original section later became known as Lincolnshire Farms because President Abraham Lincoln spent part years attending Yale University here while he served as mayor of Chicago from 1865 to 1870; he also played minor league baseball here between 1860 and 1865 with the Chicago White Stockings club. After growing tired of living on one property all his life and wanting more than one home close to some important points within Chicago (the other being Soldier Field), Abraham Lincoln decided to sell his share in Lincolnshire Farms three years later for $150 per acre ($540 per kilometer). Upon purchase, he divided this parcel into four equal parts: one went to Horace Greeley – father-in-lawof Edward Everett Hale – while still living at Ferry Point on Lake Michigan; another went to Levi Morton – son-in-lawof Stephen Ayer – upon Morton’s purchase ofasha Indian Reserve eastward from Union Station; finally, one parcel remained single family residential until 1920 when tore opened up for development into apartment buildings called “Lincoln Place” thereby becoming an integral component both economically and physicallyof downtownChicago through most OF its early decades Prentice Avenue runs parallel with Washington Road/I-635 running northeasterly out towards Schaumburg IL At various times during its history various businesses have been located within or adjacent to Schiller Park including: Flour Mills Inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Armour Brewing Co., Jugglers Club No 2 restaurant & bar - closed late 2006 due economic troubles Theater District - closed 1988 due lack Of patronage Today's businesses include: North Campus Pizza
