Gun targets have been a part of the Schaumburg, Illinois community for over 100 years. The first target shoot in Schaumburg took place on October 17, 1892. At that time, there were only three guns in the community and there was no organized shooting society. The first gun target shooting club was formed on November 1, 1902 with twenty-four members. The club soon became successful and began hosting tournaments throughout the year. In 1905, the club moved to its current location at 74th Street and Oak Grove Road. In 1916, the Schaumburg Shooting Society was organized and begansponsoring local tournaments. The society quickly became successful and continued sponsoring events until 1984 when it disbanded due to lack of membership. The Schaumburg Shooting Society is most remembered for their efforts in helping to promote gun education within the community through their tournaments and publications.

The first settlers to Schaumburg were Samuel and John Schaumburg who arrived in 1827. George Warton moved to Schaumburg in 1835 and became one of its first postmasters. James Fenton bought land near the intersection of North Avenue and State Street in 1840, which he renamed Fentonville after his friend and neighbor James Fenton from Rockford, Illinois who had also purchased land there. Fentonville was an agricultural community with several small stores and a few homes. It declined following World War I when demand for goods dropped because of wartime rationing; however, it revived during the 1920s when new industrial activity began nearby including production of automobiles by Dodge Brothers Automobiles (Dodge City). In 1925, William Pritzker bought a tract of land between State and Northwest Avenues which became known as Pritzker Park. After World War II ended, many local businesses closed due to baby boomers moving into the city; however, this changed with the arrival of millennials in Schaumburga during the 1990s along with increased development around them. Today, Schaumburgerans enjoy AARP’s free health insurance plan as well as good schools that make it one of America’s most livable communities according to Forbes Magazine In addition to its namesake street - North Avenue - Schaumburg contains several other streets named after people or places such as: Davis Road (named for General David Dixon), Homan Road (named for Colonel John Homan), Sibley Boulevard (named after Drury Sibley), Kelleher Boulevard (named for Bishop Charles J Kelleher), Lawless Boulevard (named for Mayor Julius Hilferding) and Whitehurst Boulevard (named for Admiral Harry E Washington). Additionally there are streets named after plants such as Schaumberg Drive/Northeastavenue-Schaumberg Orchard Street while others commemorate events like Woodstock High School’s win over Racine Catholic on July 5th 1979 or Peoria Township’s victory over Moline Township on November 8th 1903

Schaumburg is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 46,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Cook County after Chicago and the sixth most populous city in Illinois. Schaumburg was founded by German immigrants on the banks of the River Danube in 1847 as a small farming community known as Oberndorf am Rhein. The name later changed to Schaumburg, after local politician Samuel Schaumburg. The village of Schaumburg was incorporated as a city on April 3, 1909, following an effort by Mayor James J. Lynch and City Councilor Julius Pappenheimer. At its incorporation, Schaumburg had a population of 914 people; it grew quickly to become one of Illinois' leading cities with over 100,000 residents by 1920. By 1930 Schaumburga had merged with Hoffman Estates to form what would be known as "the three villages." In 1940 Schaumburga became one of only four cities in Illinois (along with Chicago, Algonquin Park/Elmhurst Hills and Rockford) that were not destroyed during World War II when their populations were lowered for military service; all others lost their populations due to bombings or other wartime destruction. In 1951 Mayor John D’Angelo renamed the city "Schaumburg Village" in honor of his predecessor Mayor Samuel L. Schaumburger Jr., who had been killed in action two years earlier while serving with the army's 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Overlord near Normandy France
