Schaumburg is located in the center of Cook County and is bordered by Belvidere to the north, Burbank to the east, Oak Lawn to the south, and Chicago to the west. Schaumburga was founded on November 10, 1868 by George Fenton and his family from Darien Township in Connecticut. The name "Schaumburg" means "humble place." The Village of Schaumburg was incorporated on January 1st of 1907. At that time it consisted of 134 lots with a total area of . On July 15th 1912 Schaumburger voters passed an ordinance creating a school district which would consist of 905 acres (306 hectares) including all or part of land east of Niles Road. This enabled construction of two large high schools which were opened in 1915 and 1919 respectively: John Wirth High School (now Griggs Middle School) and Park Ridge High School. On July 1st 1959 Schaumburg voters passed an ordinance establishing a city government with first municipal election taking place on November 3rd that year. The new city government consisted of a Mayor-Council form with five members each elected at-large for four-year terms; City Manager served as interim manager until mayoral elections could be held every two years; street cleaning was conducted by special squads using specially trained operators; zoning changes were made to allow for more commercial development; merged with neighboring town of Oak Lawn on August 1st 1978 becoming one municipality known as Schaumburga/Oak Lawn

They named their community after Schaumberg (a place near Weimar), Germany where they had been born and raised. In 1857, Nicholas Schaumburger donated land to form what would become Schaumburg Township. On May 3, 1881, the township's name was changed to Schaumburg Village and on July 1, 1907 it became a city. At its peak as a city, Schaumburga had an estimated population of 507 residents. On November 2nd 1909 Chi-Towns Inc., through its subsidiary Detroit Mills Company organized the first black business corporation in America when it opened The Dillard Clothing Store at 7th Street & Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago with 154 employees including African Americans employed as salesgirls and managers under management of white women store owners Mrs Airence Dixon and Miss Annie Frazier who were both daughters of former slaveholder John Dixon Sr
The Schaumburg community began as a small farming village on the east side of Chicago in 1871. It rapidly grew, and by 1907 it had reached its present size. The community was named for General George S. Schaumburg, who fought in the American Civil War and served as a general in the Union army.
