They opened a grocery store at 4th Street and South Avenue which continued to be run until 1906 when it merged with another grocer's store located near University Park to form Hennepin Grocery Co.. In 1898 they opened their second store at 8th Street & State Road 20 which continues to operate today as Hennepin marketspace #1 across from McCormick Place Marketplace). The early days of this community were quite difficult because there were few jobs available for Germans outside of engineering or manufacturing during World War I while Chicago itselfsoon became a magnets for American workers seeking wartime employment opportunities due to its burgeoning technology industry (as well as its vast amounts of natural resources). However, following Germany's entry into World War II via Operation Barbarossa (the Axis invasion of Russia), many businesses closed down or relocated due to rationing measures instituted by the Allies under lend-lease programs - including those run by Gustavus Schrader Jr.'s father Gustavus Schrader Sr.. Afterriegshouse prices went up significantly so much that many family members decided notto return after all; however some did manage to find new homes within walking distance of their old stores despite high housing prices back then (~$675/month!).
