The first known reference to Schaumburg comes from a document from 1647 which refers to "Schaumburga" as an outpost on the north bank of the Chicago River. In 1817, General James K. Polk founded a military post here during his campaign for president. The city was named after George Washington's old home town in Virginia, Scavertown (now Portsmouth). In 1853, Abraham Lincoln visited this town while campaigning for president; he stopped at local tavern called "The Bell." He then traveled through Schaumburg on his way back to Springfield. The following year, Abraham Lincoln again campaigned in this town when he ran for reelection as President; he stopped at local grocery store called "The Wagon Wheel." This store is still open today and features historical memorabilia from both campaigns including Abraham Lincoln's trademark white stovepipe hat! In 1871, Samuel Altman opened a bakery in what is now Schaumburg and became one of its mainstay businesses until it closed in 1971 due to becoming too successful for its smaller market share- Altman had started out with ovens made by hand and bakeware made by dogs! In 1904, John Fenton established an ice cream parlor here which remains open today as one of Schaumburg's most popular tourist attractions! In 1916-1917 World War I veteran George Pugsley built two small houses near current day Davenport Street (now Washington Street) as barracks for American soldiers stationed here during that war! Afterward these homes were used by various businesses before finally being sold off in 1951-1954 inclusive! Additional notable items from this time include: First African American Mayor of Schaumbarg City Walter Ewing who served from 1969 until 1977; Second Unit commander Colgate Kenneth Bogue who died during action against Viet Cong forces along I Corps enroute to Hue 1968; Three successive mayors Art Thomas (1983-1989), Dick Arneson (1990-1999) and Joseph Rizzo (2000-2008). John Jelich was elected mayoralty candidate in 2008 but declined due to term limits set aside for future mayors under state law...Today downtown Schaumburga offers several restaurants/bars/cafés/theater options catering mostly towards tourists with live music every night or so throughout summer months
