When Sauk first began to settle in the area, they were among the first white people to arrive. Saucier County, Illinois is located about seventy-five miles east of Chicago and two hundred fifty miles north of the Missouri River. It was founded in 1836 by Captain Nicholas Sauk, a French Canadian fur trader. The county seat is La Salle. In 1930, its population was just over 14,000 and it had no school system. In 1965, the General Assembly created Sauk County School District #2 which served the village of Saucierville and the unincorporated communities of Horseshoe Bend and Big Prairie. The first students were enrolled in grades one through five in 1966.Today, Sauk County has a population of over 18,000 people with over 215 businesses and 40 schools classified as “public” or “private”. The economy is based mainly on agriculture with some manufacturing employment; however there are also significant numbers of workers in the Service Sector (such as those employed by USPS) as well as a number of private businesses that provide services to residents such as transportation and health care providers. The name "Saul" comes from French for "savage." A resident of Sauk County for many years told me that he thought this name originated from when early European settlers arrived here: they would camp out on the county square during Indian hunting season because there were no other places to go! They would then name their camps after animals they had killed - for example "Horseshoe Bend," which was named after an animal discovered nearby while exploring new territory. One interesting fact about Sauk County is that it shares borders not only with Illinois but also with McHenry County to the south and western edge of Michigan Territory - thus giving some indication of how much land this area once covered! In 1836,Captain Nicholas Sauk founded what is now La Salle Township on behalf of his family's interests in what later turned into Saucier County. He located here because at that time there was little else available to him within reach due to advances made by American pioneers in transportation (the Erie Canal had been completed earlier that year). Captain Nicholas' daughter Eliza married James Canfield who resided near Pekin (now Peoria),Illinois. The Canfields donated land bordering Saucier Creek which became known as Canfield Township; James died soon afterward leaving his wife Eliza sole proprietor thereof with sole power to make all decisions affecting said township including incorporating new townships therein without consent from any other person or body having any interest therein save her own husband's bequest alone... This type governance continued until 1830 when Jameson ville du Lac was erected herein… By 1840 large areas lying along both sides Of Saucier Creek had been taken up by additional townships organized under various names including Clearwater Township (including present day White Cloud), Grosse Pointe Township (including present day Marquette), Deer Park Township(present day Alger), Meeker Township(present day Elkader) & Pleasant Valley(present day Appleton). During this time numerous mills were built throughout our township & these endeavors have led to many jobs today for our citizens…. Our excellent public school system has kept us supplied with educators since 1861 when we formed our district #2….. Today almost all children living within our boundaries attend schools operated by either Cook or DuPage CountiesPublic Schools while most children living outside our boundaries attend private schools run either voucher programs or charter schools…. A recent study conducted on behalf of our school district revealed that 66%of students attending public school receive financial assistance from state/federal governments thru special Programs like Race To The Top., No Child Left Behind., Head Start., & PreK-12th grade tuition remission program….. Some farmers still grow crops although technology has greatly changed their methods making growing food more difficult…….. From 1850 until 1860 nearly everyone who lived within 10 miles radiusof La Salle owned property within SAUK COUNTY…thus providing an ample opportunity for marketing such produce

Sauk is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Sauk is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Sauk was founded in 1836 as a farmstead by Nicholas Sauken and his family. The Saukens ran the farm until 1868 when it passed to John H. Kapp and his heirs. It was purchased by Edward Sowell in 1893 and passed to his son-in-law Edwin Ladd Jr., who had bought it from Edward Sowell's grandson Clarence Ladd on December 8, 1912. In 1916, Edwin Ladd Sr.'s widow Mamie sold the land to Samuel Prentice because he could not afford to keep it himself and gave it to the townspeople for use as a public park. In 1954, William Foust became the first black person elected Mayor of Sauk after winning an election against incumbent Hiram Abbott Jr.. He served two terms before being impeached in 1956 for misuse of office; he was later acquitted of all charges following an investigation that found no grounds for impeachment beyond improper political actions by Foust himself. Foust remains nationally recognized as one of America's most colorful mayors thanks in part to his work on behalf of black Americans during the segregation era in Chicago through various non-profit organizations such as "The William Foust Foundation" which continues today under new leadership Hiram Abbott Sr., father of current Mayor William Foust was also elected Mayor (1956-1960) after challenging Wm Foust
Sauk was founded by John Grimes in 1836 as a farming community on the Sauk River. The town became a post office in 1838, and soon developed into a agricultural center with some of the earliest cotton plantations in Illinois. In 1862, Sauk was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had fought in the American Civil War and later served as President of the United States. The town changed its name again to Prairie du Chien in 1896 before becoming Sauk City again in 2002.
