Sauk, Illinois is a small town located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 1,428 at the 2010 census. Sauk is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Sauk were the Potawatomi tribe who resided in what is now Sauk Township on the north side of Lake Michigan. In 1795, French traders and explorers traveled through this area and claimed it for France. The first white settler in Sauk was Lieutenant John Stillwell who built a cabin on the bank of Little Big Bayou in 1824. He named his property Stillwells Prairie after his kinsman still living in Canada at that time, James Stillwell. The first post office in Sauk was established in 1825 by Captain Charles Findlay with the name of Findlay's Prairiepost Office. At this time there was only one road leading to or from Chicago so transportation between these two cities was by boat or horseback. The following year,1826 saw another white settler arrive to help promote land sales around present day Saukshire Drive/Old Capitol Road: Augustus Bacheller purchased a block of land from Captain Findlay which included present day Old Capitol Road and portions of what are now Dark Hollow Road and Grosse Pointe Avenue (now State Street). After some convincing from local officials he finally moved his family into their new home on April 30th, 1826 just prior to Indian Removal Act which ended all tribal occupancy within Du Page County for those 7 years! November 22nd 1830 marked not only whites moving out but also Native American Sachem Kanagawa's last days as well as "the end" of Aboriginal presence within DuPage County! With that said many memories associated with early Saukshire settlers can be found scattered throughout today's community including Anthony House (built 1835), Captain Findlay’s Tavern (opened 1840), Otto’s Feed Store (first built 1847), William Hockaday’s Livery stable (1850-1851) & store building #2 known locally as “Hickory House” – opened 1861 – all located on present day Grosse Pointe Avenue just east of Old Capitol Rd./Saukshire Dr., just southwest of Hickory House Park! As mentioned earlier numerous other families lived here over time such as: Buckner, Bowen, Anderson etcetera until essentially every household had multiple members working outside the home most often during timesOf War when men and women were drafted into military service; many unable to return home afterwards due to illness etcetera .. In nearby Plainfield Village however activity began shifting towards agriculture rather than handcraft production more typical among aboriginal villages situated along Lake Michigan shorelines where fruits trees grew abundantly along with maize crops used for food both human & animal consumption; game hunted include deer(antelope) & bear( Ursus arctos horribilis) while later vessels brought salt water fish like bluegill (+ Cyprinodon carpio+ Ctenophora cuvieri) becoming common sights offshore.. By 1840 most residents near modern day Orland Park had left for good although some continued farming via markets back then operated outof their homes.. Many did NOT leave because they could no longer compete economically against larger farms within Plainfield Village or elsewhere duringThatTime however simply because large tracts remained unoccupied.. Likely because village leaders decided to focus efforts instead on developing infrastructure needed for growth such as schools/ roads etcetera .. In 1849 another group arrived seekingemptionfrom English ownership: Daniel Denton Jr., father of future United States Congressman Daniel Denton III bought 424 acres extending northeast from current site facing Grosse Pointe Ave.: including an additional 20 acres acquired adjacent to Connersville Rd/State St.: bounded northerly by Grosse Pointe Ave., westerly by Old Capitol Rd./Saukshire Dr., southerly by Cook Rd./Lake Shore Blvd W.; easterly by state line - forming Saugus Creek reservation according to Enumeration District No 3 hereinabove called "Denton Reservation". This purchase increased acreage remaining available upon English removal policy cancellation dated October 14th 1850 due largely to weather conditions caused by severe drought across much central Illinois starting about that date resulting primarily from heavy rains occurring over summer months September-December... Consequently under section 6 Of The Indian Removal Act Of 1830 all native occupants withinDu Page County must surrender possession thereof immediately without delay provided they meet certain requirements including being able to show cause why they should not be removed . Unfortunately very few natives actually complied given incentives offered handsomely government grants + passage through customs;; enabling them easy access westwards into Indiana Territory .... Although initially hope focused predominantly on creating self-sufficient communities beyond reservation boundaries man clearly realized sooner rather than later majority would haveTo Leave if wanted To Enjoy Opportunity Present !! As mentioned earlier many individuals originally residing near modern day Orland Park had already left before formal orders were issued allowing those remaining primarily onto parcels closer to original homestead sites.... Most likely Doomed since lack of suitable land elsewhere combined with harsh weather conditions led many people choosing immediate removal rather then endure long drawn out process+ hardships+ uncertain future ...... even though initial plans called for upcountry residences exclusively intendedFor Chiefs And Headmen Elected From Tribal areas Only..... Continued development throughout entire western half OF THE UNITED STATES eventually culminating In Overpopulation problematic suburban sprawl Many People Forced Out completely Resulting InMassive Destruction Of Rural Communities Called "The Great Migration" ....................... Overall There Was Quite A BitOf Fulfilling Promise inherent In ThatDayfullRocketingPopulation Growth ................. Exceptional Situation Given HUGE IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES LOCATED IN SOUTHWESTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Especially True For Indians Who Were Forced OUT AND NOW LIVING AS NON INDIAN RESIDENTS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT................. Today We Knew What We Were Doing When We Started...... Saints Protection Order Urged All White Settlers Within 10 Miles To Come Home Before It Was Too Late!!!
