Sauk is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,459 at the 2000 census. Sauk is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Sauk is named after Isaac Sauk and his wife Sarah. The Sauks were one of the original groups of Americans to settle in Kane County. They came from Hamburg, Germany in the mid-19th century and began farming land around Clear Lake. When their farm failed, they moved to what is now Sauk in 1881. The first store opened here in 1885 and it was called the Post Office Store until 1942 when it became known as the Lion's Head Bakery & Cafe. In 1915, Lula Jane Neely built her home here and went on to become one of Kane County’s most prominent women leaders with whom many locals considered their “mother” figure. Neely died in 1984 but her memory remains strong at Community Hall where she once presided over a bake sale for children who had too much money to go to church on Sundays The town was originally named "Sauk", but that name was changed because a post office there had been closed down by then-Kane County Treasurer Lemuel Heston (1862-1940). State Senator Charles Schieffer (1900-1983) proposed changing the name back to its original spelling after he learned about it from local residents who objected to having their proper name changed without their consent or knowledge. After receiving some feedback from residents who preferred "Saul," Heston made his final decision and approved the change on April 13, 1949; all other Kane County post offices kept their traditional names throughout this period According to Village Historian Don Wagner: "In May 1902 when township trustees met at village hall for organizational purposes they decided that 'Saul' would be an appropriate name for a new township - something which must have pleased Mrs. Neely because she had always felt that 'Saul' represented so much good about her boyhood home.'" On July 11 of that year pursuant §2(a) of Township Code Section 5-5-3() Daughters League Of America donated property within two blocks east of Saucier Road/Route 66 intersection for use as a public school district park (now Parkview Elementary School). This also marked District 3's inaugural season as organized school districts." On November 16, 1906 "the siren call" summoning men serving sentences at Cook Correctional Facility originated just north of Prairie View A&M University campus while students were getting into cars across Harrison Street; soon afterwards several men wearing blue shirts carrying whiteboards rushed onto campus waving signs reading: "Greetings! Our friends! We are abolitionists! Do you know how we do it? Let us know!" One male demonstrator leapt out from behind cover holding up an American flag with thirteen stripes running vertically through center flanked by cannonball heads above each stripe; this event has been dubbed “The Day The South Metropolis Began” As early as 1881 there were farmers living near Clear Lake . A post office opened at Saul in 1885 . It became known as Lion's Head Bakery & Cafe . In 1915 Lula Jane Neely built her home here which later became known as Community Hall . She served on village councils until 1984 . In 1947 voters passed Act No 9956 giving rise to current day Sauk Township Name Committee On July 11th 1956 Daughters League Of America donated 2 blocks east corner Saul Rd./Rte 66 for Public School District Park which marked District 3's inaugural season

Sauk, Illinois was a small town in southern Illinois located about 20 miles south of the city of Chicago. The Sauk community is one of several communities that were established along the Illinois River in what is now Kane County by early American settlers. In 1836, the Sauk community had a population of only 30 people. By 1840, the population had grown to 100 people and by 1845 it had reached 150 people. By 1850, Sauk had a total population of 300 people. The town was named for David Saucier who, according to records, donated land to the village for development. Saucier's donation included 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land on which the village was founded and 50 acres (20 ha) of surrounding country which became known as "The Prairie." In 1857, Captain James Fenton purchased 10 additional acres from David Saucier for $580. Fenton built a small log cabin at this location and called it "Fenton's Landing." The first post office in Sauk was established on July 1, 1857; it functioned until 1865 when it changed its name to "Sauk." In 1862, John Larkin took over as postmaster and continued to serve until his death in 1861. On November 8th 1863 – just two years after Larkin's death – the Post Office at Sauk burned down due to an accidental fire started by one of Larkin's employees while he was changing mailbags into sacks. Three days later another fire destroyed part of downtown Sauk while another blaze destroyed portions of neighboring townships during November 15th 1863; these fires left 14 businesses and residences damage or loss totaling $1 million dollars ($102 million today). A new Post Office building was constructed at this location between 1865-1868 under the direction of postmaster General John Daley who oversaw construction project which cost $11 million ($236 million today). Lackland Park developed around this time including many shops and services such as hotels and banks that thrived through various waves of immigration culminating with changes brought about by World War II when over 60% Of all jobs within Kane County were related directly or indirectly to war production: transportation, munitions manufacturing etcetera It should be noted that although much has changed since then - economy & demographics have not - some aspects have not declined such as daily life experience via ZIP codes
Sauk is an incorporated village in Crawford County, Illinois, United States. It was established as a settlement by the Sauk and Menominee tribes in 1836. The village name is derived from French "souk" meaning "a little stream" and "manin" meaning "settlement." In 1871, Sauk became part of the city of Peoria.
