Sauk is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It lies along the bank of the Fox River, east of the village of East Moline and west of the town of West Moline. The Sauk post office was established in 1869, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1960. Sauk is located at (41.775767, -88.636362). The first settler to arrive on the site was James Kadin; he built a cabin on what is now Lock Street in 1871. Kadin's heirs sold the land to John Larkin in 1875 for $3 per acre. Larkin developed a mill here and recruited 25 men to help build it; they arrived from Indiana and Michigan on July 4, 1876. The first product exported from the mill was flour which was sent to Chicago for shipment to other markets. In 1902, Fredrika Lundgren became proprietor of Larkin’s Mill after her father died; she continued operations until her death in 1944. In 1912, a gristmill also operated near Sauk; this mill produced wheat flour which was shipped across country to various customers including Chicago Mayor William Hovie and President Theodore Roosevelt's family members.. Larkin’s Mill closed down around 1945 due to lack of demand for its products but left behind an extensive storage facility that still exists today as The Old Mill Storage Facility LLC.; it provides storage services for local businesses and contains relics from Larkin’s original mill including an engine house and corn crib used during production days.. In 1951, two new mills were opened up by Jens Hansen & Sons Inc., one producing paperboard products such as boxes and envelopes while the other manufactured coke oven gasifiers using coal from nearby mines.. After years of decline with few remaining jobs at either factory – until 1990 when both mills reopened under new ownership – they closed again within five years due largely to high commercial rates associated with large paperboard manufacturing plants outside of Illinois at that time.. A number of sausages have been made famous by or sold through Sauk natives Jimmy Dean & Co., most notably those found on Dean's famous "Butterfly Burger" fast food restaurant chain featured throughout much Midwest advertising prioritizing taste over health concerns... Sausages are also hunted down by farmers who produce them for their own livestock feed
