Sauk is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,946 at the 2010 census. Sauk is located on the Fox River and within the Chicago metropolitan area. Sauk is part of the Rockford–based Central Illinois Statistical Area. The first white settlers in what is now Sauk arrived in 1814 and built a cabin on the banks of the Fox River. They were farmers and their families hunted game and gathered wild plants for food. In 1825, they erected a log cabin on top of an old millstream to serve as their home until they could build their own house. In 1827, they voted to become a town under the name "Sault Ste Marie". The first post office was established in 1829 with Payson as its first mail carrier. The first store opened in 1830 by Wm Henson and Bros.. The present store was built in 1907 by J S Snider and his son-in-law Geo Mathers Sr.. The first school was established in 1830 by Mrs A Brawley with six students from Saco Township joining her before she moved to Prairie du Chien to open her own school there two years later. Mrs Brawley's school burned down in 1840 but another school was soon constructed with help from local citizens. In 1832, Andrew White set up a sawmill on Black Creek which became one of Sauk’s main sources of income until it closed operations around 1900 due to health problems caused by spiders that infested the watercourse upstream from the millpond where White had constructed his millrace.). In 1865, James Fenton donated land adjacent to his farm named "Fenton's Farm" which became Sauks' central business district when he organized village trustees who bought out all other claimants (). This area remains today known as Main Street (). Mr Fenton also donated land east of this original donation along Black Creek (now State Road 6) for future development including an elementary/middle school, church building (First Methodist Episcopal), tennis courts (later used as animal stadiums), community center (later used as an adult education center) and housing developments (now known as Fenton Park). As part of this endeavor Mr Fenton also founded Lumbermen’s National Bank which still operates here today (). Sauk is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Sauk is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the Fox River and sits atop a hill on the east side of Sauk Lake. The Sauk Indian Tribe inhabited this area for over two hundred years before white settlers arrived in 1812. In 1814, Alexander Macdonald and his party traveled through this area and noted that it appeared to be "a very fertile country" with plenty of game. A group of McIntosh brothers built a cabin in what is now Sauk after purchasing land from the tribe in 1816. They named their cabin "Fox's Ferry." In 1819, General David Dixon explored this area and found that it was full of trees and good grazing land. He purchased 640 acres from the McIntosh brothers and renamed it "Dixon's Prairie." On December 21, 1830, Dixon had a meeting with Chief John Peebles at which he announced that he had created this region as part of organized civilization with an ordinance providing for public schools and highways There were no roads or trails until after 1840 when developer George Stephenson erected the first road through what is now Sauk village on April 12, 1847
Sauk was founded in 1837 by George Sauk and his brothers. The Sauks were a tribe of Native Americans who lived in present-day Illinois and Michigan. The Sauks had their own language and culture, which helped them survive during the early 1800s. In 1837, George Sauk married Anna Ladd. They started a small farm near what is now Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Sauks also traded goods with other tribes in the area. In 1840, they began trading with the Onondaga Indian Nation. By 1845, they had a store and post office in Green Bay. From this business, they began to make money and start a family. George Sauk died in 1861, but his wife continued to run the business until her death in 1886. Their children took over the business until World War II when it was sold to Sears Roebuck & Company.
