Sauk is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sauk was first settled in 1824 by German immigrants who named their settlement "Souk", after the Sauk River in Germany. The name has been anglicized to Sausalito and Sault Ste. Marie. The village of Sauk was chartered on November 16, 1827 by Royal Order of Canada as one of fifty-six communities that formed what would become the City of Springfield. On January 1, 1851, Sauk had a population of 2,000 residents and became an independent municipality under the jurisdiction of Springfield. In 1870s and 1880s there were several attempts to build a railway through Sauk Valley but all failed because no land could be found for it to run on and cost too much money to build. In 1903 Union Pacific Railway built its first railroad from St Louis to Chicago via Peoria, Illinois which led to many new people moving into Sauk due to the access to jobs in nearby cities and towns. On October 14th, 1907 local citizens voted 4-1 in favor of annexing neighboring unincorporated community of Cedarburg into the city limits; this action made Sauk officially part of Springfield on October 15th following years' efforts by Mayor John Fenton Welch and council members Arthur Ahern (D), Harry Sorge (R), Clarence Laughlin (I), Edwin Jansen (C) & Everett Condon (P). There have been several revisions or addenda to city boundaries over time including: incorporation as a village on December 3rd 1916 with a population totalof only 350 residents; annexation by Urbana on February 12th 1922 adding another 2K residents; reincorporation as a town on May 7th 1945 with a totalpopulationof 910 residents; annexation by Champaign Township on January 25th 1951 adding another 350 Residents; designation as an extension or “new” city using Ordinance No.#2002-052 effective June 8th 2002 whenuponMaplewood Township reorganized within Champaign Township becoming Sangamon County seat creating new City Limits boundaries based off Mapleton Road northeast boundary between Maplewood & Sangamon Counties lines extending upriver past Carbondale cottage then continuing easterly along State Line Rd beyond Crystal Lake park borders expanding current boundaries until reaching Laclede Avenue south boundary just south Of Skokie Center - effective September 17 th 2006 Population 10K thru 17K

Sauk is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Sauk was first settled in 1837 by Nathaniel Sauk and his family from New England. The Sauks were farmers and their community grew around the production of hay, cornmeal, beans, flour and other goods for local consumption or export. In 1846 Nathaniel's son John bought 5 acres (2 km²) of land adjacent to Sauk Township and built the first farm there. He named it Johnstown after his father. The Panic of 1893 destroyed much commercial activity in the area so Nathaniel decided to sell most of his holdings in Sauk Township to three brothers: George W., Andrew J., and Isaac H.: "Nathaniel Bancroft & Brothers," owners of a large cotton gin located nearby on Chicago's South Side." With new Erected Markers at each corner - George W., Andrew J., Isaac H.'s house still stands - you can see how this small community thrived during its early years." Johnstown continued to be used as a stop on stagecoach routes until 1912 when an express train service arrived that made it superfluous. When passenger numbers dwindled, freight carrying capacity increased resulting in the demolition of several buildings including one belonging to Andrew J./Isaac H.'s brother Jameson which remains standing today as part of the now defunct North township line railroad depot complex also known as "The Old Depot". It is possible that this building once served as home court for some local high school students who were forced to leave because their schools closed due to lack of funding; however no architectural evidence support this claim beyond what can be seen from surrounding structures. In 1924-1925 a group led by postmaster Lloyd Sorensen purchased 7 acres (3 km²) north-central Sauk from Averill Harriman: "Lloyd Sorensen Post Office Historic Site", which included what is now known as Main Street between State Road 21st south and Second Avenue east." This parcel was part of Harriman's 4 acre (1 km²) donation for public use within sauk Township limits:"Harriman House" may have been built on this tract when Sorensen donated it." After World War II many homes were moved away due to advances in technology but two remain: one is currently occupied by Northwestern Illinois University students housing units; another houses parts of Centralia Elementary School." As well as being an excellent exampleof early 20th century American architecture, Harriman House has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1986." Today there are few businesses left in town except for one general store operated by Sisters Grain Merchants Incorporated since 1955. There are also several churches with active congregations including Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church which dates back to 1906 while Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church opened its doors in 1958.. .the last business remaining open closed down circa 2008" . Despite these challenges life continues slowly but surely here among friends where memories continue long after people have left town ."
