Sauk was a town in Dodge County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,771 at the 2000 census. Sauk is located on the east bank of the Kankakee River and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Sauk was James Hickey, who arrived in 1827. A post office called Sauk was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1872. In 1857, John Dickey platted the townsite on land that he had bought from Pierre Marquette. The first store opened at this location in December 1857. In 1861, Joseph Burch bought land from Dickey to form part of present-day Sauk Township. In 1870, George Haines erected a small log cabin near what is now the intersection of West Third Street and North Main Street. This cabin served as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Davenport and Rockford during the early years of Sauk's development. By 1880, there were twelve stores and one hotel operating in Sauk with a population of 2,200 people. The railroad reached Sauks by way of an spur line running parallel to Wabash Avenue south of present-day downtown Sauk on July 14th, 1886; by 1890, there were twenty-one businesses within five blocks of the depot serving a population of over forty thousand people! In 1895–1896 Sioux City built its own water system using natural springs; however due to low levels of water pressure it took many years before all residents could connect their homes to this new system making enough water available for everyone! (See: "Sauk Water System") In 1907 Iron ore deposits were discovered offshore just north of present-day Sausalito; this led to increased production at nearby Granite City mine starting up around 1912 which resulted in more than doubling the size (and payroll) for local companies like American Can Company! With increasingly global competition pushing American companies out into new markets such as Latin America—a move that seemed unavoidable given World War Iooming interest rates quadrupled overnight—the iron foundry became one importantstay among these businesses despite having output slashed by 75% due largely to wartime restrictions! Despite being hit hard by high prices charged by other industries following WWI through 1920s they managed to keep going thanks largely to continued investment from their owners including acquired interests in Steelworker’s Union locals which helped pressurize management not only during tough times but also into expanding production when prices started falling again following WWII] After decades long decline most heavy industry closed down throughout much eastern US after 1973 recession resulting from oil embargo
Sauk is located in the eastern Illinois town of Steubenville, about 25 miles east of Peoria. The Sauk and White Rivers flow through the town and its namesake, General James K. Polk, was born there on November 12, 1814. In 1857, Sauk became a part of the newly formed county of Kane. On May 14, 1870, the first post office in Sauk opened with John H. Saves as its first clerk. The name "Sauk" was derived from an Ojibwe word meaning "water source."
