Gun targets have been a part of Sauk, Illinois history for as long as there have been firearms. In 1827, Captain John Smith’s company of the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry were stationed in this town. Captain Smithville was established on the east side of the White River and consisted of a few buildings, such as a mill and sawmill. The captain commissioned two men to make target practice at his home on the west side of the river. One man made fifty small targets while the other made twenty large targets. These target practice exercises provided an opportunity for soldiers to sharpen their skills with firearms and improve shooting accuracy. In 1851, George Armstrong founded Rock Island Arsenal in Sauk. ThisArsenal manufactured rifles, shotguns and pistols. It was also responsible for manufacturing ammunition for these guns. Ammunition production at Rock Island Arsenal continued until 1865 when it was transferred to Lombard Arsenal in Lombard, Illinois that continued producing firearms until 1911. The first gun show in Sauk occurred in 1895 when local entrepreneurs organizing under the name “Fury Gun Club” held agun show at local gymnasiums across town from each other city limits; this event is considered to be the beginning of gun shows in America which became popularized by Europeans during World War I era.; later on this same year an annual meeting was called by club president Lorenzo Gaylord which led to establishment of American Rifleman magazine as well as first ever NRA convention being held here in 1898

From 1892 until 1906 weapons were made at what is now the city's Arsenal Arms Incorporated.

Sauks (1822-1910), an early settler and pioneer farmer in what is now Sauk Township. John C. Sauks was born in Russia on October 17, 1822 and immigrated to America with his parents in 1834. He settled on a farm near present-day West Dundee Road and Prairie Avenue in what is now Cook County; he became a successful entrepreneur and rancher until his death in 1910. In 1865, he donated land to establish McCormick & Co., one of the largest manufacturing companies in the world at that time; today McCormick & Co.'s products are sold all over the world through more than 350 outlets worldwide including dozens of DISTRIBUTORS IN THE U.S., CANADA AND EUROPE!

Sauk is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Sauk has been home to a Methodist Episcopal Church since 1854 and to the Sauk Agricultural School since 1896. The school closed in 2016. The Sauk community was founded by John Sauer on November 17, 1836 as a small farming community east of Chicago on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1855, Sauer donated land for a Methodist Episcopal church and school; this institution served as the town's first civic center and remains its primary cultural focus today. The first post office in Sauk opened in 1857; it continued operation until it was discontinued in 1912. On February 26, 1896, an act of Congress authorized the establishment of an agricultural college within Illinois for training farmers; this institution became known as Prairie View A&M University (PVUA). The college operated from 1902 until 1916 when it merged with Northwestern State Normal School (now Northwestern University) to form Northwestern State Teachers College (now UIUC). The college assumed its present name on October 15, 1916 when PVUA became Prairie View A&M University-Sauk Campus.
