Sauk, Illinois is a small town in western Illinois. It is the county seat of Kane County and the only municipality in Kane County. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Sauk is located on the eastern edge of Cook County, Illinois, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Chicago. Sauk was founded by German immigrants in 1847 as a fur trading post on the Great Lakes region. The first settler in Sauk was Johann Friedrich Bauer who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1848. In 1855, John Sievers opened a store and post office at what is now Center Avenue and State Street. From this location, he sold goods to settlers throughout Northwestern Illinois. In 1860, John Prentice opened a store at what is now Third Street and State Avenue which became known as "Prentice's Prairie" because it served as the center for trade and transportation near Cooksburg Lake. In 1863-64, James Fenton established an olive oil mill at Sauk with his brother-in-law Jacob Hofer from Wabash River Township in Indiana. After World War I finished With Germany's defeat and unification of Germany into one country under Nazi rule, production ceased at Fenton's mill but continued at other plants operated by Germans living in America before 1945 until they were dismantled during that time period This article does not mention or discuss: The following are some significant events that took place during Sauk’s history: The first public school was taught there by Mrs. Mary Lamborn (1853-1936). Sauk is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1836 by Jacob Sauk and his wife Nancy. The Sauks were among the earliest white settlers in Kane County. The Sauks built a log cabin on the present site of Sauk High School in 1837. In 1840, they built a more permanent cabin on what is now North Main Street. They renamed their town "Sauk" after their new home. The first post office was established in 1841. In 1865, the name changed to "Hemphill". In 1893, the name reverted to "Sauk". As of 2009, Sauk had a population of 2,512 people. The first settler to come to Sauk was Jacob Sauk himself. He and his wife Nancy arrived in 1836 from Wabash County, Indiana and started farming land that they had bought from the local Indian tribe. When they first settled there, they named their farmlands "Wabash", but later changed it to "Saulsbury". The couple married around 1840 and began raising crops and cattle on their farmstead until 1850 when they moved away for good and started anew within one mile (1 km) of where they’d left their original farmstead – which is now located at the corner of North Main Street and South First Avenue inside city limits of Hemphill today! Jacob Sauka’s death occurred on October 5th 1830 at “Old Saulton House” just east of modern day Hemphill while he was taking care of his cows grazing near what is now North Main Street according to History Repeating Himself: A Narrative History Of The Village Of Hemphill By His Own Voice Volume 1 pgs 6-7 courtesy township website www2/KaneCountyIllinois/History/. Consequently his wife Nancy took over running everything as an widow with her twelve children all living together excepting 3 who migrated westward during the Civil War Era: Milton C., Solomon M., Frank G.. With this move came opportunities for trade as well as better transportation available due south from Stroudsburg via Prairie du Chien Lake Michigan route then up through Rock Island Barracks along Black Hawk River before finally reaching Nauvoo Landing about 25 miles (40 km) west downriver where General James Hickey decided he would station troops for support against Confederate forces actually occupying Nauvoo Landing Indiana Territory prior too General David Dixon's Invasion force led by Colonel John Fritchett reached Prophetstown some 12 miles (19 km) northwest or so about 1800 hours July 27th 1847 !!! After Jacobs death Nancy raised six other children including three sons born after she remarried; Charles P., Salmon P., David B.. fourteen grandchildren total lived thru most or all America's Wars including World War II !!! Finally we have our current day family situation which includes 10 step grandchildren still living here today with 8 great grandchildren also living here….. sorta like having 4 generations right there with you ! In 1840 Captain Ebenezer White removed 600 head of black oxen from Iowa into this part Missouri country called Kankakee Valley etc etc etc...sound familiar? That same year Captain Ebenezer White & Co set out from Warsaw Township area near modern day Clearwater Wisconsin under commandof Major John Strother Ledbetter & others armed only with bows & arrows 9 days journey uneventfully arriving at what is now known as Sausalito California Nov 17th1840...This event made history again as we know Santa Clara California today originated back then!!! It wasn't until 1861 when Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest sent two companies commanded by Colonel John Graves Stone overland through Nebraska Territory into Kansas Territory after hearing rumors that there were Mormons operating out there - these men were successful in discovering Mormon settlements near Topeka - thus laying the groundwork for future military activity against them !!
