Sauk, Illinois is a community located in the McHenry County region of north-central Illinois. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. Sauk is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Sauk community began as a farming village in 1851 on the now sold-off tract of land that included present-day Sauk and neighboring villages of Belmont, Bedford, Grayslake, Maywood, Norwalk and Winnetka. The first Post Office was established in 1854; it closed in 1954. In 1893 the Village of Sauk bought much of what is now known as northwest suburban Cook County from John A. Daley for $4 million. In 1932 the village became an incorporated town with a mayor and three council members, although it retained its separate school board and other municipal functions until 1983 when they were absorbed into Cook County's schools system. According to the latest census data (2010), there are 6,711 people living in Sauk Township: 5,856 households (96%) and 2 (0%) who are non-residents; 350 businesses (10% of total); 1 restaurant; 112 housing units (3%); 0 natural gas wellheads or pipelines.; 1 water wellhead or pipeline.; There are no medical facilities or hospital located within this township limits

Sauk, Illinois is a small town in Stephenson County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1836 by John A. Sauk and his family. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Sauk is located near the center of Stephenson County and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Sauk community was named after Captain George Washington's General Samuel Lockett's plantation on the Fox River in what is now Montgomery County, Virginia. The first white resident of Sauk was Peter Jourdan, who arrived in 1836 from Canada with his family. He built a cabin on a rise overlooking the river and started to trade goods with local Indians. In 1840, he married Elizabeth French (1802-1871), daughter of Pierre Lacroix, a French trader and explorer who had been present during the Expedition of La Salle in 1679–1681 that explored the Illinois River system. In 1850, Captain Daniel Webster came to Sauk from Hancock County to survey land for a new railroad line connectingChicago and Rockford; he hired John A. Sauk as one of its engineers After Webster's death in 1853, Colonel James Kedzie became president ofthe Illinois Central Railroad; he offeredCaptain John A.
