The town was founded in 1854 by the Sauk Tribe of Indians, who named it for their chief, Sachem (Saulteaux) Winnebago. The first gun part to be manufactured in Sauk was an oil drumlock shotgun known as the “Winchester Model 1871”. The Winchester model 1870 rifle became popular with American farmers during the 1800s because it could fire a ballistics-based ammunition that could penetrate many types of defenses. The first handguns were Firearms Ordinance No. 1 of 1865 made available to law enforcement officers throughout the United States. This ordinance regulated handgun possession and use within certain limits, including a ban on carrying pistols without a permit. Saul, Illinois is a small town located in the extreme northeast corner of Illinois. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Sauk is home to the only high school within a 100-mile radius and the only post office in that area. Sauk also has two churches, one Baptist and one Roman Catholic, as well as an elementary school, three Junior High Schools (grades 7-12), a middle school (grades 9-12), and four high schools (grades 11-13). The Sauk Area Chamber of Commerce has been active in promoting economic development in Sauk since its incorporation in 1955. The village of Sauk was platted on November 3rd, 1836 by Josiah Halsey and his brother Nicholas Halsey. It was named for General David Yates who led an American force against the Shawnee Indians near present day Springfield, Illinois on July 4th, 1814. At first Saul was just a simple cabin used by the residents for their farm purposes until it became known as "the most important place in all of Iowa." In 1870 when Stephen Aiken purchased land east of present day Saul he began to build what would become known as his Gentry House estate which still stands today. He also started building what would become known as Greek Revival style homes throughout much of central Iowa. In 1905 Orville Aiken developed what would become known as Sauls Corners which included the now popular grocery store/cafeteria called Olive Garden & Co., built on what is now Main Street in Sauls Corners; later becoming Olive Garden's parent company Darden Restaurants Incorporated; built additional housing including 10 apartments on North Prairie Drive between Highway 604 and Highway 805; finally developing a shopping center encompassing both businesses with 5 acres behind it on South Prairie Drive between Highway 604 and Interstate 40 providing easy access to downtown Chicago from rural areas around town. In 1984 Village President Clarence Kapp donated $1 million dollars to support high school athletics here at SAUL & brought about construction of current SAUL Stadium which seats over 500 people for football games & recently added another 400 feet to capacity making it America's largest open air basketball court! Today this vibrant community offers wonderful memories for everyone from birthdays to weddings or simply enjoying quality time with family or friends while out exploring their beautiful village!

Sauk who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as an U.S. Representative from Illinois. Sauk was founded by German Americans in 1847 as Amherstburg Settlement, which became Sauk after a post office was established there in 1853. The first settler in Sauk was Peter Weimer who arrived on March 3, 1847 with his family from Germany via New York City and Albany, New York Captain John A. Sauk fought for the United States during the Mexican-American War and later served as an U.S. Representative from Illinois When American settlers arrived in what is now Schuyler County they began to name their communities after prominent figures from their national origin or hometowns such as George Washington Carver or Daniel Webster In 1853 Captain John A. Sauk's settlement of Amherstburg Settlement (later renamed Sauk) was platted within present day Schuyler County when James Mclntyre purchased land therefrom As early as1871 three churches were serving the community: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1865), Lutheran Church of America (founded 1863), and Methodist EpiscopalChurch (founded 1863). The first post office opened at Amherstburg Settlement on December 12, 1853 under the name of "Harrison". On July 7, 1860 Reuben Jenson opened a general store at Amherstburg Settlement which became known as Jenson’s General Store until it closed its doors in 1911 By 1880 there were twenty six businesses located within present day Sauk including five general stores and eleven farmers' markets On October 22nd 1890 local citizens organized a “Gentlemen’s Agreement for Betterment of Streets and Roads Therein” which resulted in creation of a government body called “the Board of Commissioners for betterment of streets and roads within said town limits” This board functioned until 1893 when it merged into the city government under Mayor George Hynes
Sauk was first settled in 1836 by the Sauk River Sioux. In 1847, it was organized as a village and named for General James K. Polk. The town was incorporated in 1903. It is located near the Wisconsin state line and is one of the few towns in Illinois that borders Wisconsin.
