In 1873, Sauk's first gunsmith, John A. Carlson, opened his shop in a log cabin on the east side of town. In 1903, Carlson moved to a more modern building and began to develop a line of gun cleaning kits. His kits became popular and continue to be produced today by various manufacturers.

Sauk is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Sauk was named for John Sauk, an early settler and surveyor in the area. The first post office in Sauk was established on November 5, 1847. The first settlers of Sauk were Pierre Le Moyne and his family who arrived in 1792 from Canada. In 1811, three brothers by the name of Dufault settled here also. They built a log cabin which still stands today near the junction of Illinois Highway 2 and US Highway 16 (now I-290). In 1813, George Hull came to this region from Hennepin County, Minnesota with his father Isaac Hull and brother Jacob Hull. They erected a log Cabin on what is now Main Street near present day Smith Road. When they died childless within two years of each other; their wives took over the management of their household affairs and continued to reside there until 1830 when Mrs. Hull sold the property to Captain James Cooks for $400 cash plus ten acres (20 hectares) of woodland valued at $10 per acre ($4 per hectare). Captain Cooks renamed it "Cook's Prairie". In 1830 John Ladd purchased 50 acres (20 hectares) from Captain Cooks for $200 cash plus an oxcartload of goods valued at $100 - this land later became known as Ladd's Prairie or Ladd's Cornfield because it lay along present day Lake Michigan Avenue between State Street eastward and Park Avenue northward where Chicagoans would walk their dogs during winter months It should be noted that these purchases did not include any rights to build homes on these properties; only use them as animal pastures or grazing land for stock until given permission by landowners With additional purchase money brought in by railroads under Act Of Congress passed December 3rd 1865;Captain Cooks' Prairie finally became Sauk Township due to its location adjacent to new railroad tracks running parallel to old state road beds This township has been continuously constituted since then without interruption... Sauk was founded in 1828 by a group of German immigrants. The town was named for the Sauk River, which runs through it. Sauk became a small village after being incorporated as a township in 1852. In 1907, Sauk Township merged with neighboring Clearfield Township to form the current Sauk County.
