The menominee tribe lost their hunting grounds to other tribes and converted to Christianity in 1821. They built churches and schools around this time and became known as "the good Christians".developeda market economy which produced goods such as flour, butter, bacon, cheese and eggs for local consumption or export to other towns along the river system. By 1830 approximately one third of all Indian males had become farmers; numerous small businesses dotted downtown Sauk until about 1870 when large lumber mills started up across Illinois due to railroad construction which disrupted trade along the river systems making it difficult for Indians to earn a living from their land holdings alone
