Round Lake is a small town in central Illinois, located near the communities of Peru and Newburgh. The name Round Lake originates from the Potawatomi word "kround" meaning "a roundabout or circuit." In 1850, Isaac Hirsch founded the town of Peru and named it after himself, while still living at his farm north of Round Lake. In 1861, when Illinois became a state, Round Lake voted to become its capital and remained so until 1886 when Bloomington took control as Illinois' capital city. In 1924, Round Lake was merged with neighboring townships to form Peru Township (later part of Bloomington). Today, RoundLake's economy revolves around farming and animal husbandry; some primary industries include manufacturing (particularly textiles), broadcasting/telecommunications services, retail sales and light manufacturing. The township has two schools: one public school serving grades K-12th and one private school for seventh through twelfth grade students.
