By 1813, most likely because of this activity and other reports from France about active hunting grounds along the Saint Clair River in central Illinois Territory (now Kane County), fur traders began trading at present-day Round Lake. A post office called Round Lake was established in 1892; it served until 1907. In 1924, round lake became part of Mayfield when that village became a part of Urbana Township. In 1951, round lake was annexed into Champaign Township; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it merged with nearby Metamora to form the current roundlake settlement entities
The village of Round Lake was founded in 1847 by John A. Ketchum and his wife Catharine. The first post office was established in 1848, and the first store opened in 1850. In 1871, the village became a town, and in 1886 it became a city. Round Lake had a population of 2,000 residents when it became a city.
