In 1872 the town of Round Lake merged with nearby Stephenson to form what is now known as Springfield Township. At the time, Stephenson had 4 churches and 300 residents whileRound Lake had just one church and seventy-six residents. In 1903 Round Lake's water supply was reversed due to an overflow from nearby Swift Current Dam; this caused some social unrest as many villagers were dependent on water supplies that they no longer received. After years of litigation, the Village Board resolved to provide all citizens with a water filtration system in 1955 based on community input from which led to its current infrastructure including a public works department and wastewater treatment plant. In 2000 roundship company Navistar Incorporated moved its headquarters from Chicago to Round Lake after purchasing Carrier Corporation's assets there for $1 billion USD. The move helped round off local economic development since Navistar has been one of Springfield's largest employers dating back to 1978 when it leased space at Ford Motor Company's old facility on Main Street near South High School until 1984 when it relocated across Harbinger Parkway into a new building next door at 350 Main Street later renamed Navistar Place North Incorporation Headquarters LLC (NPIH).
The first post office in Round Lake was established on October 15, 1869. The town of Round Lake was organized on July 1, 1870. The first school was built in 1871 and the first jail was built in 1875.
