Round Lake is a small, rural community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded by Welsh settlers in the early 1800s. The community is located on the east side of Round Lake, about northwest of Chicago. The original post office was established in 1818 and remained in operation until it closed in 1906. The first settler at Round Lake was John Davies (died 1799). He and his family arrived from Wales in 1798, and built a cabin on the edge of Round Lake. After some years they sold their cabin to John Goodrich (1772-1847). Goodrich had emigrated to America from Wales when he was sixteen years old. He worked as a laborer on various farms before coming to Round Lake in 1807. He built a log cabin which he later used as his home and store. In 1825 he married Anna Cook (died 1848). They raised six children: James Cook (1826-1902), Arthur Cook (1829-1900), Sarah Cook (1831-1912), John Fulkerson Goodrich Jr.(1835-1914), Helen Goodrich(born ca 1840) and Edward Goodrich(born ca 1845). Some time afterAnna's death James married Mary Ann Wright who also lived at Round Lake for many years. John Fulkerson Goodrich Sr., son of John FulkersonGoodrichJr., became one of the most important farmers at Round Lake during its earliest days. He owned several hundred acres of land around Round lake and cultivated corn, wheat, potatoes, beans and other vegetables throughout most of the nineteenth century while also working as an attorney with the Kane County Board of Commissioners. Mr.Goodrich died suddenly at age seventy five while attending a dinner party atoneof his homes late one night in 1905; leaving behind two excellent sons - Harry Cunniffe Goodrich(1920-)and Everett LaughlinGoodrich(1924-) who have carried on his father's legacy both professionally and personally; four daughters - Bonnie EthelGoodriches(1945-)Walter Hickeygoodricshepherd&Barbara Hickeygoodricshepherd & Kathleen Hickey goodricshepherd & Colleen Murphy; three grandsons - Neil Michael Cunniffegoodricheschoolteacher2002&Christopher Anthony Cunniffegoodricheschoolteacher2006&Patrick Josephine Cunniffe goodricheschoolteacher2008; one granddaughter - Nuala Clare Murphy
The village of Round Lake was founded in 1836 by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Backus. The village rapidly grew, becoming a major center for agricultural production and trade. In 1847, Round Lake became the site of the first county seat in Cook County. In 1865, Round Lake was renamed Chicago after its incorporation as a city.
