In 1899, a man named Harry Hines killed an animal with a rifle at Point Lookout State Park. From 1904-1907, rounds were shot off of Long Island intoLake Michigan by residents of the town of Sparta for hunting purposes. In 1916, rounds were fired from an artillery piece at the US Military Base at Fort Sheridan in Chicago and it was the first time round shots had been used within city limits. In 1924, ammunition manufacturer Winchester introduced its new 12 gauge shotgun rounds which became known as “Winchester Magnum” rounds. These rounds could be shot up to 100 yards and caused tremendous damage because they created such high pressures inside shotguns. They remain one of the most popular types of ammunition available today. In 1925, Round Lake became home to America’s first airship hangar and during World War II it was used to store munitions and munitions components made abroad. In 1984, Round Lake School District #205 merged with neighboring School District #327 to form the current Round Lake-Hinsdale school district. The merger created two adjacent schools but left intact three elementary schools (Algonquin Heights/Round Lake Elementary; Central Park/RoundLake Middle; and Northfield/RoundLake High) as well as one high school (Central Park).

Round Lake is a small, unincorporated community in far southwestern Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the banks of the Kankakee River, east of Chicago. The village was founded in 1857 by John Pohlman and others as a result of an donation from James Fenton. The name Round Lake was chosen because it resembles a Roundshaped Rock that had been found near the site. The community grew steadily until it reached its peak in the early 1920s when it had a population of around 300 people. After World War II, round-house construction became more common and Round Lake began to decline; its population peaked again in 1960 but has sincedeclined significantly. In recent years there have been efforts to revive the community but no sign yet of any new development or growth
Round Lake was a small body of water located in the city of Plainfield, Illinois. The lake was created by damming the Des Moines River and formed from the overflow from several nearby farms. The first settlers to Round Lake were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1844. The Methodists built a chapel on the site of today's Round Lake Elementary School, which served as their headquarters for missionary work in what is now Michigan County. In 1847, a mill was constructed on Round Lake by John A. Brown and Company to produce flour for local residents and merchants. The mill remained in operation until it was destroyed by fire in 1902.
