The town was named for Round Lake, in neighboring Winnebago County. Round Lake first became a community in 1885 when it was organized as a result of the consolidation of two other villages, Northfield and Winchester. The community had a population of around 100 people and prospered until 1907, when it merged with nearby Sycamore to form what is now known as Round Lake-Sycamore Township. Round Lake continued to grow slowly through the years until it reached its current size by 1920. At that point, interest in the community waned and it declined slightly over the next few decades before rebounding somewhat during World War II thanks to military construction projects within the town limits. In 1950, however, all growth stopped again due to declining birth rates and an increase in immigration from Mexico which caused many residents to leave Round Lake for greener pastures elsewhere across America. Today only a very small percentage of round lake residents still reside there; most have moved away since 2000 due to various economic reasons or because they no longer find value in living near water resources
On Round Lake, Illinois the first European settlers arrived in 1812. The town of Round Lake was founded by Joseph and Nancy French in 1814. The settlement was named for a roundabout on the original surveyed land. The first post office around Round Lake was established in 1816. In 1828, the village of Round Lake became a city with a population of over 100 people. In 1902, Round Lake merged with neighboring towns of Herrin and Rome to form the new city of Rome Township. In 1912, Junction City merged into Rome Township as well.
