In 1925, sales tax rates were raised from 3¢ per dollar to 5¢ per dollar; this increased business activity as entrepreneurs set up shop offering new services such as shorthand writing classes and ice cream sales during summertime hours. The first telephone service arrived in 1927; by 1940 there were six stores selling radios and twelve businesses providing services such as laundry, grocery shopping, real estate consulting, dry cleaning/laundry services, auto mechanics/repairs and boat repairs among others. With an ever growing population came an increasing demand for space; by 1951 there was only enough land left on Rounds Point Road (which ran parallel to the beach) so that cars could park shoulder-to-shoulder without getting wet while pedestrians walked or took diligences across the water’s surface directly into town center where they could buy groceries or soft drinks from convenience stores built along both sides of Route 66 which bisected Rounds Point Road like two giant buttons running perpendicular to each other about midway through RoundLakeBeachIsland
