Romeoville is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Romeoville was founded by John Rome in 1864 as a small settlement on the banks of the Chicago River. The community grew rapidly and by 1881 it had a post office, school, and hotel. In 1893 Romeoville became the capital of what was then known as Cass County. The town declined in popularity after World War I and fell victim to economic decline. However, since the 1990s it has seen a resurgence in development due to its proximity to Chicago and its wide range of cultural attractions.

Romeoville, Illinois is a small town located in Chicago, Illinois. The population was 5,251 at the 2010 census. Romeoville is home to the Roman Catholic Church and the Romeoville Cemetery. The town was named for Giovanni Battista Romeo, an Italian explorer and author who discovered what is now Romeoville in 1836 while exploring the area. The location of the village had been under consideration for years as a site for a future city but no plans were ever made. In 1868, construction began on what would become Romeoville Village, which was completed two years later. The first store in Romeoville Village was opened by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1870. The village quickly became known for its fertile land and abundant resources, which led to its growth over time. By 1910, there were 10 businesses in Romeoville Village with a total payroll of $10 million. In 1938, Pope Pius XII dedicated the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto at Roma Boulevard and Cicero Avenue in honor of his mother – one of the few places open to Catholics outside of main Catholic cities such as New York City or Boston. The shrine has since become one of Romeoville's most popular tourist attractions because it features beautiful artworks from around the world including copies of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling and an original Shroud from Judas Iscariot’s trial scene from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Romeoville is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. Romeoville was founded by John Rome in 1859 and named for him. It is located about 8 miles (12 km) north of Chicago on the former railroad line between Rome and Aurora. The town was originally part of the Huron County seat but was moved to Kane County in 1870 after Huron county seceded from Illinois. The first post office opened in Romeoville on July 1, 1861, and remained open until it closed on December 31, 1966. The first settlers were John Rome and his family who arrived in 1859 from Kentucky via the Erie Canal. They platted what is now Romanville on a farmstead they bought near present day Aurora Avenue and Wabash Street. John's grandson David J. Rome started construction of the first frame house in 1865 which still stands today at 5th Street and State Road 97 North (now US-35). In 1871 David built a two-story brick structure which still stands today as the Administration Building for Kane County Stadiums Incorporated (KCSI). In 1886 David built another two-story brick structure which still stand today as Head Start Center East (now Home Depot), also known as "the John Fitch House". Additionally, during this time periodDavid also constructed two other two-story brick structures: one at 218 West First Street now known as "Pinehurst", which served as business offices for KCSI; and another at 218 South First Street now known as "Casa Romano" which housed the Town Clerk's Office until 1984 when it became home to Home Depot again before being sold to Park District #5 LLC in 2009 for $15 million ($120 million total value).
