Romeoville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Romeoville's location on the edge of a large rural area made it an agricultural center for many years until its growth as an industrial center began during World War II and has continued since then. As of the 2010 census, Romeoville had a total population of 2,563. The first Romanoville was built in 1871 by Ivan Romanowsky as part of his land concession to Daniel DeWolfe Smith from Canada. The town was named after Russian general Pyotr Ilyich Romanoff (1815-1881). In 1876, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Romeoville and pronounced it "the best place in Illinois" because he found it strategic forges iron rails at nearby Moline and manufacturing other raw materials for munitions production in wartime. In 1865, Romansyev bought some land east of Romeoville from John Pemberton which included what is now Cicero Township; he named it Slavia (Slavonia) after his father-in-law Prince Dmitrievich Sviatopolkovich Sviatopolk (1792-1865), who helped him win control over Russia's Polish minority during the October Revolution that overthrew Tsar Nicholas I in 1917. In 1868, Romansyev donated 50 acres (20 hectares) to his son Dmitry Romanovsky to be used as a school ground and churchyard; he also donated 100 acres (40 hectares) east of Slavia to establish Romnoye Lake District parkland known today as Romeoville Park. A millstone gristmill operated near modern day Cicero from 1795 until 1862 when the water power supply became available from White Rock Creek north of Romeoville downstream at present day Griggs Road bridge about one mile south of present day village limits on Racine Street NW just beyond what is now corner lot #4 [at intersection with present day Griggs Road bridge] in DeWolfe Township -Romanovsky family home/site]. This millstones were owned by Abraham & John DeWolfe Sr., Jeremiah DeWolfe & others prior thereto; note: Abraham De Wolfe sr., Jeremiah De Wolfe Jr., Abram Demarest lived here prior to Abram Demarest owning this property Apr 1862 – Mar 1865 according to WILLIS map dated 3/2/1902 . Romeoville, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John Romeoville and his wife Catharine. The city was named after John's father-in-law, Julius Caesar Augustus Romanus. The first post office in Romeoville was established in 1851. In 1865, Romeoville became a town when the village of Romeocastle was merged into it. On May 30, 1886, the town of Romeoville became a city when its boundaries were expanded to include the current portion of Lyons Township (now part of Rome). The population of Romeoville reached 10,000 by 1910. By 1920, the population had grown to 25,000 and peaked at 40,000 in 1930. After declining since World War II due to dwindling economic activity and suburbanization, the population decreased again until 2000 when it reached 20,000 again. Romeoville is located at 636 N State Street on an agricultural tract that has been owned by the same family for more than 200 years. The township is bordered on three sides by Lyons Township and on one side by Richland County; however most people living in or around Romeoville consider themselves residents of Lyon Township because that is where their schools are located. Although Lyon Township is larger than any other township in Richland County only about 15% of all traffic passing through Romansville comes from Lyon Township while 95% comes from Richland County proper
