Romeoville, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was named for Julius Caesar and his wife, Claudia Ara Lucretia. Romeoville is home to the Julius Caesar Museum which includes exhibits on life and times of Julius Caesar as well as artifacts from his time in Rome. The guns used by American Civil War veterans were often confiscated by local authorities after the war ended and many were melted down or sold off to collectors. There are several examples of Confederate forces taking advantage of this situation and melting down Union firearms to sell them back to the Union side when they emerged victorious in 1865. In 1881, a group of businessmen In Romeoville formed a new company called "The Armoury". This company produced high quality rifles and pistols for sale to law enforcement agencies across Illinois including Springfield (now Springfield Armory),Normal (now Peoria), Carbondale (now Bloomington),and other towns within reach of their factory location on State Street between Capitol Avenue and High Street in Romeoville. The company continued production until about 1914 when it became inactive due to World War Iraine

In 1870, Romeoville became a village after it joined Cook County. The village had a total population of 248 people in 1920. In 1960, Romeoville merged with neighboring townsWaukegan and Maywood to form what is now called "Romeoville Township." As part of that merger, Romanoville also lost its independent fire department which had been separate since 1869 when it was organized as "Maywood Township Fire Department". Romeoville first saw action during the American Civil War when Union forces camped near its intersection with Illinois Route 6 on July 10th of that year. A battle took place nearby on July 12th which ended inconclusively with no injuries reported among either side In 1865, Julius Caesar Stone moved to Romeoville from Decatur IL where he worked as an editor for "The Courier" newspaper. His business acumen led him to found Stone & Sons Hardware store in 1885 which quickly became one of the most important businesses in town
