Gun slings have a long and varied history in Romeoville, Illinois. The first gunslingers of the area were pioneers who traveled to the area during the early 1800s to trade goods with Native Americans. They brought their firearms with them when they made the trip and soon began using them for hunting and target shooting. The first handguns in Romeoville were probably imported from New England by one of these pioneer gunsmiths. It is thought that he may have been the first to make an effective handgun out of iron or brass, which was not common at that time. The early gunslinger era in Romeoville ended around 1853 when a group of settlers founded Romeoville Village on land that had once been part of the ancient city of Palmyra. This village was located along present-day State Route 5 near what is now Fairmount Cemetery. Shortly thereafter, Romanoville became home to one of Illinois' first blacksmiths, John Gentry, who worked beside his white colleague George Stephenson at Gentry's forge until Stephenson's death in 1857. After Stephenson's death, Gentry continued work at his forge until 1861 when he moved his business to Springfield where it still operates today as Gentry Forge & Gun Works LLC. In addition to gun smiths like Gentry and Stephenson, other important contributors to Romeoville's early firearms industry were two men who lived there for many years: James Cooksey and John Ahern both born in Ireland but raised in Romeoville after coming overland through Detroit during the American Civil War (1865-1866). Cooksey immigrated to America as a young man and worked as a mason before eventually starting his own construction company in 1865; he is also credited with developing Luigi Vignelli’s “pistol grip” type holster design which later entered into common use across North America.
