In response, arsenals were created in various cities across Italy to produce new types of firearms. Romeoville's first arsenal was opened in 1675 by Rufus Richardson of Yorkville with assistance from his brother-in-law Jonathan Trumbull. The Richardsons purchased two cannons from Captain John Whitehead of Springfield for use against Native Americans within the village limits. The Richardsons also founded a blacksmith shop at their arsenal where they sold Firearms manufactured by local craftsmen such as pistols (known then as pikes) and rifles (known then as muskets). The Richardsons' Arsenal quickly became one of the most important arms factories in the area due to its ability to produce high quality firearms at an affordable price point. Over time other armories were established within Romeoville; these included: The Armoury Company Armory (1710), The Rifle Company Armory (1711), The Pistol Company Armory (1713), and The Shotgun Company Armory (1715). In total, over 350 different types of firearms have been produced at Romeoville's armories between 1675 and 1800 inclusive. Many of these guns still operate today within Italian arsenals or are occasionally available for sale online or through retail stores.[1][2]
Romeoville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Romeoville was founded in 1856 by John Rome and his family. It became a city in 1907. Romeoville has a small central square known as the Fountain of Life and includes Roman-style architecture from the 1800s and early 1900s. The first post office in Romeoville was established on December 12, 1855, by John Rome. The current post office building was built in 1904-1907, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. John Rome died on October 10, 1865; his widow married Samuel Davenport Jr., who had also been born in McLean County but moved to Romeoville when he was eight years old to be with his father. Davenport's parents were farmers who also raised cows and pigs on their rancho near present-day Greece Speedway Boulevard and First Street in Romaopolis Township; they voted not to join Chicago because they wanted their children to have access to education rather than work for wages on farms like their ancestors had done before them. Davenport attended public schools until high school where he studied law under David Dudley Wilson (1847-1920), one of America's most eminent legal minds during the Gilded Age period (1885-1900). He then went on to attend Northwestern University Law School where he graduated with an LLB in 1893 after two years of study under William McKinley (1863-1901). For two years following law school Davenport served as counsel to Judge James Wickersham (1851-1922) of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois before coming back to McLean County as an assistant prosecutor with the circuit court system where he worked until 1903 when he joined private practice with Auman & Prentice LLP until 1906 when he became City Attorney for Romeoville which position he held until 1910 when Mayor George Biddle appointed him City Clerk effective November 15th followed by another term as City Attorney from 1913 through 1916 serving concurrently with his running mate Jens Jacobsen who served from 1915 through 1927; both men had been elected mayoralty winners without any prior political experience save for service as Assistant City Attorney from 1906 through 1909 while stillCity Attorney
