Romeoville is a town in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,772 at the 2010 census. Romeoville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The history of Romeoville begins with three brothers named John, Nicholas and Michael Romanowsky who farm land near the present-day town of Romeoville. In 1872 their father died and they took over his estate which included a tract of land that would later become Romeoville.Romanovoilles first store was built in 1875 on present day US Route 31 east of the village center. It was operated by local farmers until it closed its doors in 1917 due to World War I shortages of supplies. In 1924 the first school opened in what is now known as Romanovoile Elementary School #2 where instruction continued until 1974 when it merged with Notre Dame High School #2 to form the current high school campus. In 1978 Romanovelle became one of twelve townships within Hancock County when it was created from parts of Old Tappan and other smaller communities. At that time all township facilities were consolidated into one building which still stands today - The Capitol Center for Learning & Counseling located at 515 North Main Street in Romeoville Township (formerly known as "Doris Hall"). Today there are four elementary schools; two middle schools; one high school; and two postsecondary institutions including two colleges: Northern Illinois University-Carbondale (NINU) and DePauw University (DePauw). There are also several businesses such as A&W Pizza, Joes Pizza, Dunkin' Donuts, Subway sandwich shops, gasoline stations etc., making Romeoville an economic center for many miles around. By 1870, there were over 150 businesses in the town and it had a population of around 500 people. When the railroad arrived to Romeoiville in 1881, many businesses closed and the population decreased dramatically. However, by World War I, Romeoiville had recovered enough to have a population of around 1,000 people. After World War II ended, the economy slowed down and most residents left for various reasons including jobs in Chicago or other nearby towns. Although most of the original buildings have been destroyed or abandoned over time, some remain standing as testament to Romeoville's history.
Romeoville was founded in 1854 by John Rome and his wife Anna. The town was originally named for John Rome, the father of Anna, who resided in nearby Cairo. In 1876, the town's first post office was established. In 1890, Romeoville became a city and in 1924 it was annexed to the City of Chicago.
